Hello Everyone,

We are a reseller of XNET VOIP Services, and have several times tried to confirm how many phones we can plug into a XNET DSL connection and ensure they still work.

We have also posted this question here a few months ago.

We grilled someone on the helpdesk as well, and they didn't have a real answer, but told us in a roundabout way it was unlimited, which didn't really make sense. He also confirmed that we could run 8 phones on one DSL line.

We assumed that if each line uses around 60-80kbps we could run 10 on a 700-800kbps upspeed line. 

We were now told by the dealer channel that we can only run 5 lines on one DSL line.

Today we have been told we can only now run three phones on each DSL line.

This is very fustrating as we are ramping up to sell a lot of these phones, and these changing requirements greatly affect our target market and offerings.

It really does depend on your codec selection and the bandwidth of your connection. Since most people have an ADSL connection without a guaranteed minimum speed then any slowdown in peak hours is also going to limit the number of simultaneous connections.

It all depends on the codec's with overheads a G711 call will consume approx 87kbps, G729 less at about 31kbs per call so the answer will vary depending on codecs, Codec selection is also done automatically and may change between G729 and G711 depending on requirements and support  of the codecs from the called number,

As for ensuring they will all still work, pretty hard to ensure this with a shared DSL connection but for business with a number of lines I would be recomending a better grade of connection,

My take on it is that it is not only about bandwidth but also about QoS.  If you have lots of voice lines going at the same time and all of them getting high priority, then somehow you have to have all of them running at exactly the same priority to get the same quality on all your calls while still dealing with the ancient TCP/IP protocol.  Just guessing, but as an engineer it sounds complicated.

Sounds more like confusing two issues:

The 5 line rule came about after some issues back in late 2006 where customers were being sold a heap of lines on an ADSL connection, which given that ADSL is sold as an uncommitted service is a really bad idea.  This rule is such that should a customer require 5 or more lines, they are required to be on a WorldxChange managed connection, such as UNS, Fibre (and I believe, but I've never sold it - Kordia Extend is also acceptable).

The 3 line rule is to do with the residential and commercial distinction of accounts.  Once a customer hits 3 or more lines under an account number, they are required to move to commercial pricing, i.e. $20/line and billed for local calls.  Unless something has changed then you should still be able to order 4 lines and pay commercial rates but still operate off ADSL.

That all said, this is something that should be addressed to the dealer channel and not in a public forum.  Additionally, if a business does actually need 4 simultaneous calls running then you're talking about a customer with 8-10 staff too.  Such a business depending on ADSL as a means of conducting commerce is a crazy business if you ask me, especially if they're hinging their ability to trade on a $50 a month connection.  In this case my personal view would be either the customer needs to be on a managed connection with uptime and performance committments (i.e. UNS), or this is a customer who is a tightass anyway in which case are they a customer you want to be dealing with?

I agree with bender.  Nothing irritates me more than seeing the "I'm losing $10K/hr because my $29/month Internet connection is down due to XtraBubble".

If it's that important to your business, use the right tools and build it properly.

I agree - and sorry to post this here, I simply find it the place for the most accurate and quick source of information. It would be really good if there was a dealer channel forum to chat about this stuff, without disclosing it to the unwashed masses :-)

I disagree. There's no secret information on this discussion to warrant it being a private discussion. I think it's good to have this well define as bender explained, because a lot of people asked this before.
