Hello GZ,

I'm looking for a modem with a recent chipset like BCM63168, I own the Spark modem HG630b but unfortunately the telnet access is locked by Spark password, and they don't want to give it !

On trade me a find a lot a HG659, same chipset but they seem mainly come from Vodafone.

Before buy one, I would like to know if a telnet or SSH access is possible, and what kind of command you can access ?

I'm mainly need 'adslctl' or 'xdslctl' to be able do fine tuning of ADSL options.

So if you have one, I will really appreciate your help.

cheers,

This is the good login. It can be used on either the web pages or via ssh into the router."

The Spark has telnet on some firmwares.

The Vodafone has SSH but dodgy wifi on some firmwares.

The Bigpipe has no SSH/Telnet.

AFAIK all of them have their broadcom driver nerfed to not allow snr tweaking - Much like the in the TG582n firmware that spark used to distribute.

Thanks phantomdb, I already found all those stuff, but I'm looking for direct user experience.

hio77, I don't care about wifi, I use only the modem. About the driver restriction it's not a good news for me...

Someone can confirm the password provided by Vodafone works on SSH ?

simply was listing it out in full to my knowledge for you.

could i suggest looking at possibly a NF4V? for adsl the driver is completely open to playing around. VDSL the tuning options are not there.

I'm only interested by ADSL tuning, hard to find the chipset info of this modem

I quickly have a look on the firmware and that says 63268 (looks like the same family of the BCM63168) can you confirm ?

But damn... it's not cheap ! :D

look out for a cheap one on trademe. few isps do them.

Its a full VDSL/fibre ready modem/router so obviously it is a tad pricey.

I dont have my spare nf4v hanging around to test with right at this moment though.

In case anyone's still wondering about this:

HG659 supports 'xdslcmd':

This is because your settings file has TelnetEnable="1" however ConsoleEnable="0".

I've built a config file to BigPipe V100R001C297B011 which enables Telnet and Console here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=158&topicid=201985

I've built another one for Spark which *should* work too: http://filebin.ca/2uyUZGXdCUd6/SPARK_HG659_enable_telnet.conf

(WEB: admin / admin, CLI: !!Huawei / @HuaweiHgw)

If you want me to build one for VF firmware you'll need to send me a settings backup file from your router:

  • Backup your current settings: Maintain > Device Management > Backup or Restore Settings > Backup
  • Reset to default: Maintain > Device Management > Factory Restore > Reset
  • Backup your default settings: Maintain > Device Management > Backup or Restore Settings > Backup (Send me this file)
  • Restore your settings: Maintain > Device Management > Backup or Restore Settings > Restore Settings

Otherwise if you want to give it a crack yourself:
