I just noticed that Vodafones Pay and Go casual rate for text messages is now 1c (when did that happen?). I have a device that has wifi access 90% of the time, and can easily make do with casual txt and calling for the other 10%, so regular data plans don't make sense. However, occasionally usage patterns change and it will be out of wifi range for a while.

I've been looking at Vodafone's site, but it's still no clear to me whether you can buy data packs or prepay carry over packs while on "Pay and Go" use them until they expire, and revert to pay and go casual rates. It says something about there being no fee to move to prepay 29 from and "older" plan, but then you "can't transfer back". Does that apply to Pay and Go?

hey there mate :)

From the website:
http://www.vodafone.co.nz/prepay/pay-and-go/?gclid=COfM6anmxswCFQsnvQody9MNAw&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=COvOjqrmxswCFRR7vQodtbIG6w

It should show that casual data is possible and will charge for 20c each mb used.

You can move freely between $19, $9, $29 and pay as you go plans for no charge.

Hope this helps!

No if you want monthly carry over minutes/data on Prepay you have to leave the Pay and Go plan and stay on the Carry over plans.

Prepay Pay and Go customers are still eligible to buy daily/weekly/monthly data packs which expire and are forfeited after a specified time. The data packs are purchased as "Prepay Boosts" or offered through limited time "Fantastic Friday Deals".

Actually I take that back the only way to buy data packs on Pay and Go is through "Fantastic Friday". Data packs purcahsed through Prepay deals last 7 days.

"4. This plan doesn’t include Always Available Deals, but does include Prepay Deals."

i.e. Always available deals = Prepay Boosts for $9 and $19/29 plans.

Prepay deals = Fantastic Friday deals.

I was just looking at the boost page and it only had options for 9 and 19/29 prepay plans, so unfortunately it looks like you're right.

If there are no reliable "boosts" for pay and go, I guess I can rule that out.

So if I activate a prepay 29 sim and (after the initial pack expires) just keep some credit on it and not buy any further prepay packs, will it essentially act like an uneconomical version of 'pay and go'? I can just suck up the 20C txt/49c call casual rates (keep data disabled), and I will have the option to buy prepay packs whenever I ever need them, right? Only in my case it wouldn't be that uneconomical because I won't be texting or calling heavily anyway.
