Hi,

I've been noticing some quite long delays over the last week with receiving mail inbound to xnet.co.nz.
I presume this is due to SPAM checking and maybe a high volume of inbound mail?
Think I need to log a helpdesk ticket for this?

An example that took 6 minutes for 'titania' to process:
Received: from titania.wxnz.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by titania.wxnz.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id EC73D5E9E93
for ; Wed, 27 Feb 2008 15:47:34 +1300 (NZDT)
Received: from mail1.ezibuy.co.nz (unknown [210.55.16.234]) by titania.wxnz.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8751D4A2943 for ;

I've noticed this too. Waiting up to 10 minutes to receive small (testing) emails.

What happens if you flag the e-mail as important/urgent?  Does it go through faster?  It is normal to give e-mails a lower priority, and I would not complain about a few minutes.

On a similar note, do you know that SMS is not guaranteed to reach the end point?  It usually does, but it is not guaranteed.  There are many subtle things people do not realise, and I guess the speed of e-mail delivery is also one of them.

Note: Please don't divert this thread to an SMS discussion, I simply used it as an example of how customers do not always know the finer details.  And the statement is correct, I have designed a vehicle tracking/GSM/GPS system and know what I'm talking about.

I'm not complaining about delayed emails (well, not 10 minute delays). Just commenting on what I've noticed lately.

As for priority, any idea where to set that using Gmail?

It appears that Gmail does not support setting of the priority nor listing/sorting according to priority.  However, all e-mail headers do have a priority flag in the header and all e-mail clients I have used allows you to set it (ah, recall the good old days using Pegasus Mail and upgrading to the Windows version).  At work I seldom get an e-mail with the flag set, except our SPAM filter which sets suspect e-mails to low priority.

Email isn't a real time protocol. While most mail does get sent almost straight away, delays of 6-10 minutes wouldn't really be considered out of the norm.

When we start talking about hours of delays - then we are getting somewhere...
