So here I am travelling and using my laptop connected via my cellphone which acts as a hotspot. All works well: POP and SMTP email, browsing the web (obviously, since I am posting this) but I am unable to update any of my websites using FileZilla (latest version) via FTP over TLS, or SFTP.

Since I have sites on various hosting companies, and I am unable to FTP any of them, I asume this is a Vodafone problem or restriction. Can anyone confirm? And what is the workaround? I was able to use use File Manager in cPanel, but that's not a real substitute for FTP.

I had issues with that once, just used SCP instead. WinSCP is a great package for uploading stuff.

Since you are going over CGNAT sometimes FTP has issues as it uses two ports and they could be coming from different source IPs which the server won't like. Try using Passive mode. Or as already suggested using SSH / SCP is a far more reliable for file transfer. Or you could use the direct APN as that would probably sort it but would be bad for other reasons as it allows inbound traffic which is a bad idea on mobile.

Thanks for trying to help. Setting connection to passive did not help. Downloading and learning a new FTP client... not sure if I have the time whilst I travel. FileZilla works fine from hotel hotspots; but I wish I could use my Vodafone!

Downloaded WinSCP, which imported all my logins from FileZilla. Unfortunately that does not solve the problem: I cannot FTP any of my sites from any connection (whether hotel, home or Vodafone): "Connection failed. This security scheme is not implemented"
