You can't connect it like that

ie:

VCR into STB into TV

Only:

STB (Set Top Box) into VCR, then VCR into TV.

What type of set top box do you have?  Digital or Analogue?

As ZollyMonsta said, the only way it will work is STB -> VCR -> TV.  And using either RF so you have your "VCR" Channel and "STB" Channel on the TV, or via Composite and leave your VCR set to "AV In".
