I've forked this thread from the "International Capacity Issues" thread, just to keep that one on-topic.

Discussion was moving towards services that people would like to see on XNet's network, thereby increasing local performance and also (hopefully!) coming under the banner of non-accounted traffic (i.e. the user doesn't get charged for it).

So far we've had some requests for:
- Linux distro mirrors
- Gaming servers (XBox Live, PlayStation Network etc.)
- Content Distribution Network nodes (e.g. Akamai)

There've also been some requests for clarification of whether ALL on-net traffic is non-accounted. Specifically, whether this includes traffic from one user to another, and not explicitly via an XNet "defined service".

Xnet hosts recoil, so that includes gaming servers and their content server (which has unbuntu haha). Oh, they have akamai as well.

user to user is not counted as local

I don't know what Recoil is, but I'll try a Web search to find out. I'm guessing it's a PC gaming service? Something which ISPs need to quickly become aware of is that PC gaming is in severe decline (apart from WOW), and that console gaming is seeing massive growth. Having some boxes running Team Fortress 2 / Quake (any variety/version) etc. doesn't cut it any more. Customers want fast access to online gaming services and content that they are paying for (in terms of XBox Live subscription etc.).

In terms of Akamai, it'd be interesting to know which services/content these servers are accelerating for XNet? Does this mean that anything on the Akamai service is accelerated and non-accounted within XNet? Can we find out which services these are so that we can use them in preference over other non-accelerated services?

Love my PS3 :)

Recoil: http://www.recoil.net.nz/
Recoil files: http://files.recoil.net.nz/

There's a Fedora repo at Xnet: ftp.wicks.co.nz (Too bad Fedora isn't very usable)

Don't forget VFX is free traffic too.  But I hardly use as much VFX traffic as linux mirror updates.

Anyone who cares about VFX traffic should already know that. Hopefully.

Although, the Xnet site does mention Recoil on the signup page. Wink
