I am going to go with this service due to great Saturn lines and terrible Telecom lines where I will be based (take a guess)

I really don't like the supplied modem as it's incredibly basic and ugly (single port, ewwww) but can I get a routing modem from the US and install that instead?? and does anyone know what network subtype they are based off? I found very little info on it through google.

Otherwise i'll have to go with the hacked Linksys accesspoint

You have to use the supplied Motorola Surfboard.

TCL issue you with a Moto Surfboard SB5101i, 1 USB port or 1 Ethernet port.

There is no way to use anything else (or even to buy your own SB5101i and use that) unless you know someone on the inside who is prepared to provision your Cable modem. In short, just go with what TCL supply, and plug in a 54GL in the end. And if you don't return the SB2100, TCL will charge you $750 for non return (when you can buy them in the US for $40) HA!. TCL used to charge a "Cable Modem Rental" of $10 per month, which is why I would have thought you should be able to buy your own and use that, however they don't do that anymore thankfully.

Plus if you go for the TV they will issue another SB5101i with the STB for extended EPG.

Before DOCSIS 2.0 the cable network was inherently insecure where downstream data is sent as an unencrypted stream to all modems on the same hub. requirement to use a Telstra MAC Provisioned modem is so people don't go snooping other peoples traffic as only telstra modems can be used the MAC Addresses are more likely to be "Safe"
