They currently pay $85/month with VF for ADSL + Landline. Mum has elderly clients who will not call cellphone's so dropping the landline is not an option.

My parents currently only use on average 10GB/month.

I looked on the VF website & fibre @ 80gb + landline is $101/month. Seems like a waste that my parents are paying for data they will never use.

Anyone got any idea's? I don't want them to pay more than they currently do ($85) but would like them to be on fibre.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

you have reset your modem and router
your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

Your ISP and plan
Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
Your general location (or street)
If you are rural or urban
If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Naked with home phone wireless might work out bit cheaper

They use under 10GB but you want them on Fibre why not look at VDSL but that might even be overkill

Do they have to go with Vodafone?

Spark for example - 30/10 UFB 40Gb including phone for $79.99

If they are only using 10GB per month, they certainly do not need 100/20 Fibre do they? (Also, maybe they will use more with more speed??)

As above a few carriers offer 40GB over copper for cheaper rate and I think Vodafone does as well

Thanks for your reply. I am open minded, they certainly don't have to go with VF. I had a look at spark but missed that option so thanks for that I'll go back for a look. My mum in particular likes tvnz on demand & now they have a new smart TV so I just want them to have a solid & fast connection really.

At my house I've got VF cable & can get a download speed of 50Mbps which I'm happy with. With that Spark plan (30/10) is that 30Mbps down?

Yep 30 down, which is plenty for TVNZ On Demand (needs about 3-5 down).

If they like OnDemand - they may also like Lightbox/Netflix - Lightbox is free with Spark plans (but they will need more then 40GB). It will be fine on 30mbps down as well.

Just out of interest; Say you had a wireless fibre modem & you were getting 30 down. Say you took your laptop to such a distance away that you reached a line where you went from having a signal to not having one. Now say everything is identical except you had a 100 down connection. At that same distance as before would you still have a signal or like being on 30 down would the signal cut off at that same distance away from the modem?

If you are that far from the modem, doesn't matter what speed your connection is at the modem, the WiFi in the laptop will still drop off.

If using a smart TV and perhaps joining Netflix or other streaming provider uses heaps of data. To future proof themselves you might look at a unlimited connection.

Absolutely no relationship between internet speed and wireless range. If you're operating at the far end of the range then the wireless is the limiting factor, not the internet pipe. So in your example, you'd be getting at best a patchy ~2mbps signal whether or not the router is connected to 8Mb ADSL, 30Mb fibre or a 100Gbps backbone.

VDSL runs over copper - the OP stated that it's a new house, so I assume copper would not be installed for new homes (like mine) only Fibre was run down the street (unless it's not a new street and it's actually a sub-divide of an existing section).

As mentioned previously, Vodafone will offer 80GB per month on 100/20 UFB for $80. In addition, if your parents got home phone wireless on an account, then there would be a $10 discount, making $70/month. The home phone wireless works pretty well and your parents would find no difference in using the phone. As an older couple, we have had the wireless phone for years, and recently got UFB, allowing us to get Netflix and enjoy the alternatives to particularly dreary offerings each night on Freeview!
