We've just moved into a new house which already has a fibre ONT installed. We're currently on VDSL as the fibre connection was going to take too long (3 weeks, even thought the ONT is all ready to go!). Anyway, at some stage soon we'll upgrade to fibre, but wondered how we can go about getting the ONT moved to a better position in the house? This would be a Chorus job, I understand that. I've seen other mentions on here that it can just take a box of beers and a few $ to get them to move it, but it that really so? How do you contact Chorus direct, if that's even possible?! Or would Vodafone play "middleman"?

The official way is to call your ISP and have them lodge an ONT relocation job for you.

we just had our fibre installed today and i asked the technician to provide me some slack on the cable as I'm planning to move it into a different cabinet.

he was happy to oblige and even showed me how to properly disconnect and reconnect the fibre cable.

they left the ONT sitting on top of the cabinet and connected temporarily to an extension power cord as i told them a sparky will come tomorrow to install a permanent power point.

they left the ONT sitting on top of the cabinet and connected temporarily to an extension power cord as i told them a sparky will come tomorrow to install a permanent power point.

I sure hope its not a chorus ONT? - They have to be mounted vertically (and up the right way) and are supposed to be mounted on the backmount on a hard surface. (having it any other way sort of voids any warranty from chorus for repairing it )

And I bet the installer didn't tell you that if you do move/disconnect the fibre connection & if something goes wrong that you may be up for a large bill to fix it.

The power connect/ disconnect thing isn't an issue.

Ha What ? / no if you already have an (Chorus) ONT the only real delay is with your RSP - Service Order processing for VDSL takes the same amount of time as it does for a intact UFB connection and can be even quicker - I would be going back to you RSP and asking some serious questions about why the delay

Part 2 - Now the delay would have been if you wanted the ONT 'moved' before/when the service was activated - either way it can only be moved by an approved Chorus contractor.

See my other response about moving it yourself - I have seen the look on peoples faces when I have to explain to them what its about to cost them for moving it themselves or getting a 'mate' in to do it: the ONT or the Fibre gets damaged or they try to replace the hybrid fibre cable with something there mate got from so commercial install or from the electrical wholesaler that looked like the right stuff etc etc etc. - (If you hadn't guessed I now spend my days in the Repair side of UFB/NGA rather than the install side)

The RSP have to play the middleman as its their services over the Fibre that pays the rent for using it. Its really the RSP that's renting the connection from Chorus. If you want it moved (active or not ) you have to go through them to request it ( I have know Idea what it would cost - that bit is outside my knowledge - although I should find out )

I seem to recall InstallerUFB stating once that unplugging the fibre from the ONT even for a few seconds can contaminate it with dust and screw the signal up.

Yep it can and does - but not as bad a a painter who though that wrapping the pigtail plug up in insulation tape to 'protect' it was a 'good' idea and then unwrapped it and plugged it back on - stuffed ONT and Stuffed Pigtail

That's the same with any fibre connector. They should always be cleaned before being inserted.

All good, thanks for letting me know.

ONT is now sitting pretty in the cabinet where I want it to be, right beside the patch panel. Didn't bother removing the fibre cable from the ONT as I didn't need to move it to a different cabinet.

My ONT is currently dangling on a piece of string whilst I get round to finishing to the comms cabinet in the garage.

With OP ONT position, is it the position of the ONT that is in the way/very visible, or is it the position of your wifi router that is sub-optimal. If it is only the router that you want in a better position, you can lay your own cat6 cable between the ONT and where you want to move router to.
