I just got a vodafone at home box, at the moment I have cheap custom brand phone from the warehouse plugged into it, when I make a phone call it has a bit di dit dit dit dit noise in the background.

I was just wondering if I invest in a cordless phone will it get rid of the bit di dit dit dit dit noise?

And if so what type do you reccommend(keep in mind we are a low to medium income family).

Thanks.

How close is the phone to the box? GSM phones tend to cause interference to neaby speakers and if your phone speaker isn't sufficiently shielded and is close to the box it will suffer from interference.

My suggestion would be to try and move the phone as far as possible from the box and see if it's any better.

As sbiddle said, the further away the better. Maybe even a phone extension cord would suit - anything to get it as far away as possible. Cordless phones aren't terribly expensive these days though (seen them advertised for $40-$50 for a cheapy at Dick Smith) - anything would do, so long as you're not going to use it right beside the AtHome unit.

Thanks for quick replies, I've been using the cord that came with the at home box(about 2metres long I think), I usually have it pulled out to maximum length.   The book that came with the at home box says the cord between the unit and phone shouldn't be any longer than 3 metres........but I imagine the extra metre won't make any difference!

I imagine speaker sheilding on my phone is non-existant as I only paid $14 for it............Looks like I need to go shopping for a better phone.

Thanks for clearing up whats causing the bit di dit dit dit noise.

Will there  be a umts version of the at home box anytime soon? Since there are so many issues with gsm now I think its a bit off to still sell hardware that uses it.

I'm still thinking about if its a good idea to get a gsm/umts to analog adaptor and feed that into my sipura fxs interface or to save up the cash to get a proper gsm to sip gateway. sometime (hence my question in the gsm forum)

I guess I can put the at home box on the windowsill that works reliably to get me free calls back to the asterisk box to call out.

Do prepay sims work ok in the at home boxes still or are the more locked down now?

My understanding is that any SIM is usable in a At Home box but if you try putting an At Home SIM in a normal phone you'll have it chopped off fairly quickly if the network registers a lot of cellsite changes within a short period of time (ie you're trying to use the device as a mobile phone).

I want to get a GSM trunk unit of some sort shortly for some testing, I'll grab at At Home unit if I can find one going cheaply but with the strong $ at present it's possible to get some proper GSM<->SIP units for around NZ$300 landed.

My AtHome box seems to be paired with the SIM - though it wasn't originally. For a while I could use any SIM in it, and use the AtHome SIM in any device - but now I can do neither.

I have a PorTech GSM->SIP gateway, a very plastic and not-very-cosmetically-pleasing device, but it does the job, and I've had no problems with it. I picked it up off eBay for US$199 + $40 shipping (was here in 2 days from Taiwan), and I highly recommend it. You may want to make a new case for it, though :P

Hmm, well I will see if I can get one cheap enough. with the vodafone family deal now it would mean that I could have calls both ways from it for just $20 a month, vs the $12 a month for the 2 bestmates but I could include all my gsm sims in the family for getting calls out via home at no additional cost.

Something to think about anyway.
