Hey guys,

Staying with my Dad who is wanting help setting up his new smartphone. Went to enter his Google account (his main email too) and can't login. It says it has sent a verification SMS but never get this. I did get one SMS last night to login on a laptop but since then nothing. I tried to use the Microsoft 2 factor authentication and got a message straight away.

The phone is a Samsung J5. The phone is on Vodafone but is on the old Telstra network. Things like texting "bal" to 777 don't work. I rang Vodafone and at first they said the number I was calling from was not on Vodafone even though I told them the phone reports "Vodafone NZ" as the network name. I then told them it may be under Telstra and they were able to use another system and find it. They stated they have no incoming messages from Google including last night when it did come through.

The number is ported from 2degrees. Any suggestions or best to perhaps port it back?

He has the backup codes printed but there is no option to use this for verification purposes. We have tried the Google recovery form but it mentions 3-5 days and I will already be gone by then :(

On the iOS google app you get a promt for 2 step verification now from google.

If it's the same on the Android platform he could sign in on a laptop and change the verification method from SMS to the google app or another 2 step app like Google authenticatior. That's option one.

Option 2 is to again sign into google on a computer. Change the cell phone number on his account to another number such as yours. The 2 step text will get delivered to your phone and you pass onto him to sign in.

Once done change cell phone number back to his number until resolved with Vodafone.

Hope that helps you out.

Thanks for the idea. I tried but to chaneg the 2 factor settings, even from a trusted computer it requires entry of the SMS code :S

Anyway yesterday we ported the number to 2degrees and this morning the codes started working! I have since printed off the backup codes and add authentication my number for recovery in case it ever happens again!

This happens when 3rd party SMS hubs are slow at updating routing tables and it's 100% out of the mobile carriers control
