Yesterday (10th) I experienced download speeds of 20-40KBps, which is a far cry from the 700-900KBps I'm used to, and was getting earlier that very day. I called up customer service, and was told it's me, not Telstra. The problem almost went away the next morning, with downloads going at just under 200KBps. Good, but not good enough.

I made a second call to CS, and after a few tests, I was told that there is, and I'm quoting, "crazy congestion" somewhere on the line. This affected International traffic, and only the download bit, as the upload has always been going happily at 2Mbit. I was asked to do traces and Email it to them for an investigation, but what confused me is that I was told that I was the first one to bring this up in my area, Johnsonville. After reading a few posts here, it sounds like many people in Johnsonville and other suburbs are experiencing very similar problems. I would very much recommend to anyone who have the following symptoms to call up CS and ask for a test to be done on the line. Not the 10-sec test they usually do, but rather the one where they put you on hold for 5+ mins:

- frequent disconnections (5+ times in an hour)
- incredibly slow download speeds at night (8pm - 8am)
- fluctuating speeds during peak times (8am - 8pm

I'm hoping with enough inquiries, they will pay attention to this and sort it out. Also, I've asked for a small compensation should resolving this take longer than 3 business days. Not being greedy, just want to get at least half what I'm paying for until this is completely fixed.

I am in Ngaio and have found in the past the performance has been very, very "lumpy". Sometimes it is fine - like right now (Sunday afternoon) I am getting, according to Speedtest.net, 5000 kbps to Auckland on the 10Mbit plan.  But I have experienced similar symptons to those you describe above, but there rarely seems to be a pattern.  I can't face calling the Helpdesk when I am experiencing slow speeds as 5 minutes later it is just as likely to be OK.  I must admit that the past few weeks haven't been too bad in regard to this "lumpy" performance.

Where in Johnsonville are you? I know that I have been having the same problems for months.

They are currently doing a lot of network upgrades, and they have been unable to give me ETA's for when it will be back to normal.

I am on Ironside road.

Am at the end of Truscott Avenue, near the park. I've been having those mini-disconnections for roughly a couple of months, but they only last 5-10 seconds each time, so I didn't care to complain, but now with the speed reduction, I couldn't take it, especially when torrenting.

If those annoyances aren't frequent, I wouldn't bother if I were you, but if you're getting disconnected 16 times this last 30 minutes like me, I would give CS a call. It can drive you mad, especially if you're downloading something from a server that doesn't support the resume function.

I'm on 10Mbit on Burgess Road. I don't remember the last time I had a d/c, and my downloads are only ever limited by the rate the other end can send. I typically download at 1.2MB a sec when getting files via well seeded torrents.

Having said that, you guys are on the other side of the motoway :o
