I am running a Vodafone Nokia N95 on Vodafone On Account

For a while now, just about every time I try and make a phone call it will take ages to connect then a Msg will pop up on the screen saying "Connection Error"

I have to try to call again 3 times before the call will go through.

I am also getting Missed calls, when my Phone has been on loud sitting right beside me. It just never rings.
I also send a txt msg and it will not send it will just sit in my outbox until I resend it..

At the start I thought it was just a coverage issue but this is happening at work & home I work/live in central CHCH

Any ideas of what could be causing this?

I called Voda and they said to try out my sim in another phone, but it's not happening constanly so I would have to swap a few days etc. to see if it was happening and I do not have access to do that.

Any help would really be appreciated.

I would first of all make sure your N95 has the latest firmware / software installed.

Go to the Nokia website, download the NSU (Nokia Software Updater) and connect your phone to it.  See if you have the latest firmware.

This should improve the stability of the phone.  My N95 runs flawlessly!

I agree, I had a fair bit of trouble with mine when I first got it but as soon as I flashed the software its been a dream. Plus there is a new(ish) version of the NSU which seems to be a bit quicker

Good advice, updating the firmware is a very good idea. Not sure what the latest firmware is that Vodafone supports, but if its not at least V20 then I'd debrand the handset in order to get V20/V21.

Worth trying a different SIM too, I had the same problems you're having with a different phone and it was SIM related then.

I have seen a similar (or same issue) on more fringe coverage areas. These are spots when it appears the 3G signal comes though nice and strong, but are unable to call. This is usually areas when there is no 3G site near by, but it has good clear line of site to something. This maybe from an elevated position, or across the harbour etc.

The only way to make a call is to switch the phone to 2G.

I'm not sure what causes this issue. It maybe distance to cell - i.e. Vodafone limit at what distance you can connect to their 3G cells. It maybe a ghost signal, i.e. one bounced off from somewhere. Or maybe the phone can not power out the signal enough for the receiving cell site, but the phone can receive the signal ok.

Thoughts??

If all else fails use the soft/hard reset codes before having to send it for repair
either *#7780# or *#7730# sorry can't remember which is soft/hard but you can always backup user data via syncing with Nokia PC Suite

Bad, very bad :-)

http://europe.nokia.com/A4579163

Beware it will wipe your phone back to factory.

Download the "Nokia Software Updater" http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/global/phones/software/NokiaSoftwareUpdaterSetup_en.exe

Install it

Run it

Follow the prompts

If I was you I would use the contacts app to backup your contacts manually (you can copy and paste them all to a folder on your PC) if they are stored on your phone. Just in case the backup won't restore.

Oh, bugger!

If one of the N95 guys here post a product code you can use, you can then use. . .

http://thenokiablog.com/2007/05/12/how-to-update-firmware-debranding-andor-change-language-pack-on-the-nokia-n95/

Changing the product code and doing the firmware this way voids any warranty you may have left, and Geekzone and us Geekzoners take no responsibility (but you should be fine)

Version 21 isn't to far away for VFNZ N95's.

So it'll skip from 12 to 21 using NSU without any issues? Weeks? Months? (Not that I have an N95 personally :-) )

Yes, you'll skip straight to Version 21 using NSU, no changing product codes etc. We are talking weeks from my understanding :)
