Hi All,

We're in Paraparaumu, and for the last few months have been experiencing frequent micro-outages of our cable connection. We're on an old 50/10(or 20, i forget) plan.

I've been unable to isolate the ageing Belkin F5D N router, as we currently have no device with an Ethernet port (thanks, Apple!)

I have however eliminated the Baby Monitor, Chromecast and WiFi Extender as possible causes.

The login page on the router often displays - 'Internet status: Not Connected', and then after a few minutes it'll show 'connected'.

Lights on the Vodafone modem always appear as normal.

Is anyone else experiencing similar in Kapiti? there was a post on a local facebook page which has elicited some similar complaints, so it seems its not just us, which while i still need to isolate my router leads me to belive this may in fact be a wider network issue.

Also - this is definately worse at night, again leading me to believe this could be a network issue rather than a router issue.

Make sure you give the helpdesk a call an get the issue logged.

There is another big thread going here based on people who have upgraded to DOCSIS 3.1 (aka FibreX) where people are experiencing dropouts or longer outages

In the this case you want Downer to come and inspect the Cable (Coax) quality for bad / poor connections

Yes, me too. I did mention it in another post but thought I was the only one affected. Glad I have seen your post!

Anyway, here is a graph of mine from the last week. (I am in Waikanae on Fibrex, 200/20).

The biggest drop over the last 7 days was yesterday. Woke up to no internet, and it stayed down till around 9:00am. (+/- 4 hours downtime)

Recorded 5 dropouts in 7 days, most last at least 30minutes. These are just pings to vodafone DNS server 203.109.191.1. Latency always gets really bad just before a dropout.

Here are some of the errors I see in my fritzbox log. I have a simular report for opendns servers and they are also affected.

Rebooting the modem (not router) rarely has any affect.

I dont believe its possible for it to be the cable. Downer will just come (again) and say its fine. They did some extensive tests on my connection when they came to do the install as I was very worried about the length of my driveway. My conenction was faultless for the first few weeks. Its only over the last few weeks have we started noticing the droputs.

After a dropout my connection is always perfect. Really low latency, and max upload/download.

Still lots of planned work going on across the HFC network and the bad weather last week caused some outages on some Nodes

Why don't you call Vodafone and explain what's happening?

You'll find they will offer you the HG659 for staying, and even though many people here hate that particular model, a new anything should perform better than a 7-year old device...

This community are not employees of each ISP or know what is actually happening, and in your case the problem may be very simple to solve.

My wife has Called. I haven't as I am out of the house between the hours of 6am - 5pm, and then my evenings are spent feeding small children and getting them to bed. By the time that, and the associated cleaning/lunch making is complete, the last thing i feel like doing is sitting on the phone to a Manilla based call centre.

My wife did not find them very helpful at all, other than providing suggestions we have already tried (eliminating noise such as the wifi extender, baby monitor, etc. And changing the channel) Apparently, he seemed reluctant to perform any tests on the Line or the cisco cable modem.

And to be clear: The problem is not WIFI outages - it is Internet Outages. And I know i'm not alone experiencing this on the coast. While the bulk of people that are reporting similar issues seem to be on the DOCSIS 3.0 network, some aren't and are still having problems.

To be honest, I'm reluctant to push hard for a resolution, because even though I've been a cable consumer since TelstraSaturn days, we now have Fibre in our street and we will be switching to a fibre provider once we sort out FTA TV.

I put my HG659 on trademe as its probably one of the worse routers I have ever had to use in my life. Switched back to my Fritzbox.

A new router, no matter how good it is, is not going to fix the dropouts.

I get the feeling Vodafone are trying to silence the problems by offering new routers, and half price fibrex internet (for 6 months).

Please do raise it as an issue with us, the more information we have the better. There is a network solution planned for this month - it's us not you.

Will do. Thanks Mike.

What is this network solution that is planned? Do you have any more details for us?

Thanks

Not much help aside from asking me to call back when I'm at home so they can test the WiFi channels.

Next time tell them you don't use wifi. Tell them you plugged directly into the router with lan cable.

Its their standard response every time.

They are offering some good deals to stay on the cable network. Give retentions a call.
