Just read this interesting article in the Tech section of the NZ Herald:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=10508700

Phase one of Clearnet will concentrate on a handful of categories, notably computer and video games, which TelstraClear has some experience of in the past through the hosting of Paradise multiplayer gaming servers. A deal with gaming server and forum host Deluxe, which has moved its game servers to TelstraClear's Albany data centre, will allow TelstraClear customers to access game servers to join games like CounterStrike and World of Warcraft without eating into their monthly data traffic allowance.

So good news for gamers on TCL.

Also:

Later, TelstraClear would consider whether to offer movie downloads through Clearnet, as BigPond does across the Tasman.

That would be interesting - especially if it didn't count towards your traffic allowance.

Clearnet - Let the games begin

TelstraClear has today launched Clearnet.co.nz, a new online destination for digital content.

Clearnet.co.nz includes news, sport, video and weather, with an initial focus on gaming. This includes the site’s own gaming servers, reviews and unique benefits for TelstraClear customers such as zero rated gaming.

TelstraClear Group Manager Marketing Luke Patterson says Clearnet.co.nz is TelstraClear’s entry into the online consumer market with the objective of showcasing and selling broadband.

"With more than 2.9 million Kiwis’ having broadband access at home, TelstraClear needs to be in the online content space. What we’ve launched today is just the first stage, with a number of planned features to be introduced that will showcase the true benefits of broadband."

"We’re a broadband company and we want to provide our customers with new and innovative ways to experience and use the power of broadband."

"We’re working on bringing more exclusive content and online initiatives never before seen in New Zealand."

Exclusive content comes from partnerships with companies such as Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. News and editorial content will be delivered via partnerships with 3 News, New Zealand Press Association, IGN.com and HB Media.

Mr Patterson says the initial focus on gaming for Clearnet.co.nz is tapping into a large and under serviced market.

"The New Zealand gaming industry is worth more than $100m per year in New Zealand. That’s a huge community and with the quality of TelstraClear’s broadband we can deliver them an unparalleled experience."

"We’re creating some gaming content ourselves, which will include New Zealand events, interviews with leading industry experts and gaming personalities and reviews. We have a gaming content editor working full time and have established our own production suite for video content."

With around 300,000 internet customers - TelstraClear is the second largest ISP in New Zealand.

This is pretty cool. I was wondering though, do the videos and game demos and patches (which seem to be coming soon) on the site count towards data cap? If the gaming servers don't then one would assume the same for other stuff... Speaking of the videos, the quality is pretty bad, and the aspect ratio is messed up. No complaints apart from that though.

Hey mate, thanks for the feedback.

When the download part of the game servers is up and running on www.clearnetdeluxe.co.nz it is our intention to ZERO rate those downloads too. There are no current plans to ZERO rate anything on www.clearnet.co.nz

Regarding the videos, yes correct SOME of them are in a lower quality and some have aspect ratio issues, this is mainly due to "test" i.e. for us to see what would work best on the site and which formats to comply with. We still wanted to share all the videos with you (and there are heaps more coming) since we think we have some really cool stuff there.

If you want to see what the aspect ratio and picture quality will be for videos we produce from now on check out the video here:

Thanks for the reply.

Interesting that traffic to/from my own ISP is charged at the same rate as international traffic... Now I wonder why that would be. TelstraClear claim that the reason national traffic is charged the same as international now (as opposed to 10% on Paradise some years ago) is that they can no longer easily differentiate between the two due a change in their network. I find it hard to believe the same would be true of traffic straight to TelstraClear.

Has TelstraClear considered running a Steam content server for its users? Many on Gameplanet forums like the idea of it, and Xnet does this with it's Recoil content server.
TF2 would be a nice addition to CSS also.

Hi mate there is a Team Fortress 2 server already, we are looking at other things to add, there are things coming that will make it an even better prop for gamers. This isn't the end it is the beginning hence the "Beta" mark ;)

Also look forward to more exclusive previews of games etc, that you wont be able to see videos of elsewhere!
