I have 2 windows 10 vs 1703 htpc's and 1 WHS2011 server. On adsl and using Linux could access all using any modem/router.  On Monday I was changed to VDSL. Really pleased with massive speed increase.   However using Fritzbox 7490 or the supplied HG669 I cant connect to them. They show up in modem under network but Linux computer wont find them. Windows 10 finds them okay.  So have HG669 connected and deleted Linux and reinstalled Windows 10 so I can connect to my network.  Why when on adsl I could connect but not on vdsl as these are on home network and don't want to access from internet. Fritzbox could connect on adsl but not vdsl and only settings changed for vdsl other settings untouched.  I have to leave hg659 connected and not reboot for next 10 days from email Vodafone sent me last night as they optimize the line.

Since you have swapped the modem out check your firewall settings on windows ten initially just turn the setting off and see if that fixes it.

Okay turned it off and booted up Linux but no go still.  strange it all just worked even with fritzbox before with adsl and not once changed to vdsl and only settings changed were to connect with vdsl.   Looks like my trying to switch to Linux is over as works okay with windows

So the linux mount commands point to static addresses (of Windows machines), NBT name or DNS resolved name???

SMB = Server Message Block aka samba or Windows sharing.

P.S. toy routers should play no part in the name resolution anyway, just use static IP addresses in the mount commands or map name to address.

Thanks for help. Yes I saw that yesterday but Linux says cant mount share doesn't exist or something to that effect. But when you go into modem the computers are listed there

Even trying to remote into them with remmina doesn't work as cant find them

I'd suggest you start by not worrying about the complexities of SMB. Does a ping work?  That'll quickly tell you if it's an SMB issue or changing the router has created a network issue.

okay I can try that later. Rather than booting with live usb since I wiped the computer and put windows back on to access them, I will reinstall dual booting

Are the VDSL routers on a different subnet to ADSL router??, are the addresses that mount points to still valid???

not sure. But getting somewhere. Don't know why Linuxlite and Mint didn't work. But on a whim tried plain old Ubuntu 16.04.  Again open network but instead of timing out and saying cant find, it opens a to a blank window. So instead of trying there I choose the other option Ubuntu has of connect to server rather than network. So when I type my server address smb://192.168.1.5 then it opens and put in my name and password and voila. I can access folders and files which I couldn't in mint or linixlite. So will install that then should be able to amp it from there.  Just getting sick of Windows updating so often just when you need to do other things. With Linux I can choose when I want when I want. But plain Ubuntu seems the way to go

Have an Asustor As-604T nas haven't used for a year. Hooked it up and can access it through ip address but not through Asustor Control Center or Windows network and cant access folders. Windows says cannot access this folder. Windows cannot access the server.  When I type in ip address through Microsoft Edge and put password in then go to settings and then LAN. The status is disconnected. So something with modem/router seems to be blocking access to other devices on home local network

I finally had enough. Re doing Kodi and it couldn't even connect to my server and plex couldn't connect to my own network let alone through the web page.  So I pulled out the HG659 and plugged my Fritzbox 7490 in. Reset and away laughing. Everything working as it should.  Couldn't find why the HG659 wouldn't work. So its now packed up and stashed in the garage to stay
