I've got 2 neighbours who have switched to Vodafone fibre and have both come to me with similar questions. I'm the local first point of call semi-geek. :-)

They are both noticing significant buffering when watching streaming video, on connections that are getting 50-70 Mbps over WiFI when Speedtested to Vodafone Wellington servers (we are in Nelson).

The sites they are using aren't any of the big players, which might be part of the issue, but the strange thing is that one neighbour still has her old Skinny 4G modem (usually around 20 Mbps max), and when she switches to that the are no streaming issues at all.

The other neighbour tried tethering their laptop to their mobile (I don't know which provider probably Spark or Vodafone, but 4G so probably similar speeds to above) and again, no buffering at all.

Anyone know what the issue might be?

Cheers

Vanman

Could be traffic taking a different route on different ISPs. Perhaps a traceroute on each ISP would be a start for troubleshooting.

Test over Ethernet and are they using VodafoneNZ DNS or 3rd party?

They are both on standard Vodafone DNS.

I've done some traceroutee and ping tests to both streaming sites, on a Vodafone and Skinny 4G connection, and there doesn't seem to be anything seriously amiss there. If anything that results suggest that both sites should stream better over the Vodafone fibre connection.

Cheers

They use openload for their streams

Might just be me but I've noticed content streaming via openload has been performing pretty badly, note i'm also in Nelson.

There seem to be a few sites called Openload, with slightly different layouts and logos. Do you know exactly what site/IP is causing you grief? I checked one and it's coming from Germany, which is about as far away as you can get - so not surprising that performance is shabby. That's one thing paid services have going for them - good infrastructure and locally hosted content.

If it's openload.co that the content is coming from, then they have their own speed test https://openload.co/speedtest  which if it is accurate, probably explains the issue.

I'm getting very variable results anywhere from less than 1Mbps to around 10.

I've also read in a few places that Openload sometimes throttle peoples download speeds depending on how much data the have downloaded in the past few days.

testing here, i bounced off 91.207.102.150 - Romania based.

Speeds are about equal to both services, Spark ramps more smoothly and holder a higher average.

Being how distant, Both Spark and Vodafone have no control really over the Routing's ability 10-20mbit on a single thread at 300ms isn't bad.

Routing is pretty decent really, TCP/IP stack isn't tuned so well for higher latency connections - Feels like close on default debian.

Yeah, checked a few UFB connections and all hitting Romania at ~300ms. Speed is all over the place, one test <2Mbps, next 25Mbps. I doubt we can improve much here; most likely a limitation at their end. AFAICT they don't have a worldwide network, but then http://oloadcdn.net/ wasn't particularly informative.
