did anyone watch the tv3 show target last night? they were talking about train delays and trains not coming and a schoolgirl said when a train didn't come she wanted to call her mum to pick her up but she said there is no vodafone signal at that train station. i can't remember which train station is was but it was one of these in auckland:

waitakere train station
ranui train station
swanson train station

these train stations are all in west auckland and are located one after the other.

vodafone should test their signal at these 3 train stations to find out which one/s has no signal.

does telecom have a signal at all 3 train stations?

Ahh what the hell.

I have poor coverage in one end of my house, not quite sure which end it is.

Should vodafone come test the signal at my house..?

if houses after the end of your house with no signal have no signal too then yes vodafone should come test it if at least 10 houses were affected. thousands of people get off at these train stations daily so it would affect thousands of vodafone customers.

Where does this arbitrary figure of needing to take action if affecting >= 10 people come from I wonder?

Vodafone is a businesses which can choose how /when/why they run it.

Perhaps they were unaware that there is no coverage at these stations - this however is different - you seem to be implying that they are aware of it but don't want to fix it - and they should fix it because of some unknown law.

If you want service there, ring them up and let them know....

It was Waitakere train station, and it wouldn't suprise me is there is reception there, its a bit remote; they dont even have a PA system on the platform! But there is perfect signal at Ranui (I know cause I live near the station) and Swanson, which is where the kids where being told to get of the trains. The reason given was that the trains where needed back the CBD. Being a frequent user of the Western Rail Line I can say when it works, it's brilliant, cheap and very convenient, but when it doesn't work its a real s**t, sorry for the language but there is no communication, never any ownership and no-one who cares if you sit in a train in the middle of summer 200 meters from the station for 45 minutes and no allowed off (yes, it has happend to me).

imo public transport areas - train/bus stations should definitely have coverage. a lot of crime happens in these locations, at night and early morning. i wouldn't expect every house in the country to have coverage but at the least I'd hope that in places of risk there is the ability to use your phone if required.

Good luck, its west auckland - They are the city that complained about the cellsite years ago in greenbay because it was on the same street as a school. There are much bigger coverage holes out there that they have known about for years and cant solve.

Yep, definitely Waitakere station. This is not a remote area, quite a lot of traffic uses this route. I drive it most days, and its a real pain of 5-10 minutes of cellular blackspot.
Yes, it is them westie tree huggers (and no I'm not one of them). Telecom installed a site here years ago, and that was meet with similar protest to the Green Bay site.

Can anyone in Vodafone can give us a heads up on when Waitakere Township will be graced with some GSM presence?

Target would be one of the worst of these type of programs in the world. I would take anything on that program with a grain of salt. One step removed from tabloid news..

i just checked out vodafone's coverage checker on their website and if you search for Township Road, Waitakere, Auckland it says the coverage is marginal. it says ' the signal may be stronger when your outside'. so i wonder how long vodafone have known about this for and haven't done anything to fix it.

i reckon the government should make a law where a train operator or cellphone carriers should have to have 100% cellphone coverage at public transport stations like train stations etc no matter how small the train stop/station is. kind of like how everyone has the right to electricity and water.

What right does the government have to force a commercial company to offer service? What makes forcing them to offer coverage at a train station any different to coverage at any other public location?

As for your example it is a very bad example. There are hundreds of households in this country (Northland is a great example) who would love to just have electricity to their houses. Running water to their houses but be an even bigger bonus. Infact there are people all over NZ who would love reticulated water.

We are never going to have 100% cellphone coverage. The growing issue of people protesting against even the thought of a cellsite in their neighborhood certainly doesn't help carriers looking to enhance their existing coverage footprint.

You could look at Greytown in the Wairarapa (lived there for years and the parents still do) the railway station what is in the middle of no where has perfect vodafone/telecom coverage but the town has bad coverage, we had to go half way down the driveway at times to geta good signal and we lived in the centre of town.
Telecom was ok though so don't know where there tower was vodaones one is on the hill above woodside station.

If you campain enough you might be able to get a mini cell site setup on top of the station, as for tree huggers they make cell sites now so they can blend in with trees and you wnnt even notice it is there.
