Hi there,

I was just wondering what the story is with number portability and prepays - can I take my 9 digit on-account number and port it to prepay? I can imagine vodafone saying "oh no sorry you can't do that".

However, what is to stop me porting said 9 digit number to telecom then back to vodafone prepay?

This all relates to the fact I am on the 3mb dataplan partly to keep the 9 digit number as I figured it may be a good asset in the future portablity-wise.

Hi,

first of all let's get our terms straight - what you're after is NOT number portability. Number portability is the abilty to port (or move) a number between providers. So Telecom to TelstraClear or Orcon to Maxnet.

What you're asking for is NOT number portability.

However, it is related to number portability and yes, you can do that today. You can take your ON ACCOUNT number and move to PREPAY and you can take your PREPAY number and move to ON ACCOUNT but if you ring the helpdesk and call it number portability, they're likely to be somewhat confused.

You should be able to switch from On Account to Prepay:

Switching from On Account to Prepay
When switching from a Vodafone On Account plan to Vodafone Prepay you can now keep the same mobile number. You can do this switch at a Vodafone retail store.

Pop along to your nearest Vodafone retail store and tell them you'd like to switch your existing mobile number from a Vodafone On Account plan to Vodafone Prepay.

The Vodafone service representative will work though the process with you, and have this change completed within a few minutes.

Remember, if you're on a contract plan such as Mobilise or You Choose, you may incur Early Termination Charges. Check the details of your plan, or see our FAQ's for more information.

If you have moved your number from On Account to Prepay or Prepay to On Account you will be unable to do Mobile Number Transfer or Transfer of Title in the future.

has anyone checked that you can still port to telecom ok after the change between prepay and on account? It seems very stupid of them to prevent you keeping the number in future if you move between services since the whole idea of moving between the 2 types of connection is that you didnt want a new number in the first place.

number porting is law between carriers does not matter if the number to be ported is prepay or account. End of story

Ie Gone from OA -> Prepay and wishing to sometime in the future go back to OA??

Surely the System would be able to cope with such a simple change if both types of switching are currently available??

switch styles!! Odd name and there is nothing stopping you unless you signed a contract term.
