Hi,

I currently have an Auckland Telephone number on VFX.  Its all good. I have a PAP2T router.

I want to get a 2nd VFX line with a Kaitaia phone number. 09-955-XXXX.

I called up Sales and was told that I can only get a 2nd number in Auckland.

Why does XVF not allow this?

They did offer the advanced services with an alternate number but it would be more economical to have a 2nd line.

In the past, I've used Vonage.  I had to different phone numbers from 2 different US cities.

Cheers,  Taite

VFX will not give you an number outside the LCA (local calling area) in which you reside. Doing this is potentially in breach of the NAD guidelines in relation to number ranges in New Zealand.

The only way to get an additional number is to subscribe to the advanced services where the 2nd number will be in another LCA but all calls and CID will still originate from your home number, not the one in the other LCA.

I advised the sales person when I first connected that I would be using this line outside NZ.  I also asked her about getting a 2nd line, with a Kaitaia number, at some time in the future.  There was no mention of a potentially breach of the NAD guidelines in relation to number ranges in New Zealand.

In the FAQ for Xnet Fusion - Voice, there is a Question regarding a 2nd line.  There is no mention of NAD guidelines.

Since I use the number oversea. does this mean I am breaching the NAD guidelines?

I doubt its breaking any regulations. It's probably just so they can sell you the extra services.

Ring up and create another account under a different name maybe?

There are a few ways around this, you just need to have a legit physical address for the line to be provisioned against.
E.G. if you have an office or holiday home (AKA friends) in Kaitaia, then you may be able to sign up under this address.
WxC's responsibility is to ensure the LCA number assigned at sign up is matched against a legit address. Where you plug your box in after that is up to you.

There are implications you do not normally think about.  What happens when you dial 111 from a phone registered against an address which is not where the phone is?  Suppose your kids dial 111 when you had an accident?  There are good reasons for the rules, and I do not think it is just to sell the extra services.

There is also the issue around free local calling and being fair to other users who would have to carry the burden of your extended free local calling area.

I don't think VoIP numbers should be registered to an address, or at-least some sort of flag raised at the 111 service. What happens when you call from a mobile? Similar to VoIP, you can be anywhere, esp if you run your service via Asterisk.

As for free local calling, well that's really an issue for WxC, and I think they partly address this by not allowing more than 2 VFX lines before then being classed as a business. I think the days of free local calling are numbered. Things will probably move to a flat rate type scheme where a near unlimited amount of national calling minutes is included in your phone package.

Hello Taite ,

It's not possible to have a 2nd line on the "same" device setup to a different lica, there is however nothing stopping you from provisioning a new device with another number for a different region. Also the advanced features pack has a feature which lets incoming calls from another region come through (providing we have a point of interconnect in the area) as if it was a local call. You cannot however make calls out on this service. Also please be aware if you have more than 2 lines on the one account this will cause the system to automatically make your account a commerical one and you will be charged for local calls.

coffeebaron: What happens when you call from a mobile?

Slightly off topic, but just to answer that question:

All mobiles can be tracked to which cell it is being used in. The location of all MODERN mobiles can be pin-pointed, which is a feature introduced specifically for emergency services (unofficially probably also for FBI and the likes...).

Technically, an IP address can also be pin-pointed to a specific physical address and I think it is just a matter of time before VoIP service providers expose this ability for emergency services (and those other organizations that feel they need it...).

So can anyone confirm, if I have a physical address in another LCA to register the number against, can I get an additional number in that LCA (in addition to the Auckland number I have).

You probably won't get an "official" yes you can response; but
- if you have a 2nd PAP2T device
- can confirm a legitimate address in the area that the number will be assigned (you may need a Telecom account & number in that area to confirm this against)
- the device will be used in that area (doesn't mean it can't be used elsewhere too)
Then I can't see this being an issue.

Hmmm... I am using a Trixbox setup, and would rather have this as a second line, rather than a second account. Sounds like it is not really "allowed" then.

Not looking to do anything dodgy here... just trying to find a legitimate method for doing this through World Exchange, without having to go to another provider for the second line.

It shouldn't need to be a 2nd account. It's more about WxC insuring that they comply with NAD rules of where the numbers are allocated.
E.G. I want a Hamilton number, so I can call people there for free = against NAD rules
E.G. I have an office or holiday home in Hamilton and want a VFX line to use when I'm there = not against NAD rules.

How you use the service after provisioning is then up to you, and should the NAD guys come running after you with a big stick for not complying, then that's your problem. WxC have done their part in complying with the rules.

We'd all love to toss out the NAD rules, but they are there and the Telco's should do their part to comply.

My wife is in Auckland and my kids are in Kaitaia. I'm on a contract outside NZ.  It would have been great to have been able to call both directly.  Ill go back to Xnet for another attempt and if its a no go then I'll look at a 2nd Provider.

Thanks to all for the interesting feedback.

Cheers,  Taite

As far as I know calls between 2x VFX numbers are free no matter which calling area they are in.  Would this solve your dilemma?  Also, can someone at WxC please advice if this is correct?

Its on their rates chart Niel. Calls to other VFX users are free no matter where they are.

Other VFX Customers Free
Local Calls Free
New Zealand National 0.05
New Zealand Mobiles 0.30

Its quite interesting not being able to have a number in another LCA. Before I heard about VFX I was with Slingshot snd their Italk service and they didnt have a local number for New Plymouth here and I was told back then I could have a number from any LCA I liked and so I picked a Christchurch one and used that for a bit until I got VFX with a local number here. Of course Italk now probably comes under those same rules where they wouldnt be able to do that now.
