Hi

Does any one know if i can buy the "iphone only" for $1279 and sign up on a you choose 20 plan. Then disconnect straight away by paying the $160 disconnection fee and run it on prepay ? It says on the website that "You can get a You Choose plan on an iPhone 3G but you will not be able to access the web without a Broadband Plan for Mobile."

Also regarding the requirement of broadband plan cant we just use wifi ? So why do we need a plan for mobile broadband if we dont want one.

Thanks for your time

You cannot use an iPhone on a Prepay SIM.

They haven't said it per se, but it's reading between the lines. The Iphone 3G will not be usable on prepay is what they have said IIRC.

Does anyone know if I can sign up to a You Choose plan for the iPhone during the midnight opening?

I'm totally keen on getting one if it's possible. I understand that would mean paying for the iPhone 3G outright, less the subsidy on the You Choose plans.

I can't wait! I just realised NZ isn't the worst place on Earth to get the iPhone 3G, it's actually..... *drum roll* Canada (for the most expensive TCO), and Denmark (for the most expensive ongoing monthly plan price)!

There have been suggestions on this board that the phone will be locked and unusable with a prepay sim. I would suggest waiting for a friend to get one and trying a prepay sim or trying one in store. I would not trust a CSR over the phone on this one.

Would be an expensive exercise though. $1000 on the phone due to no subsidy on the you choose plans, first month of $50 (cant get out of this) cancelling the contract $160 for you choose, possibly another charge ($160?) for cancelling the data plan which is also compulsory. Thats over $1400 for a prepay phone.

I don't think its quite that bad?

Don't choose a data plan, get YouChoose20 on 12 Month contract ($19.95), cancel immediately ($40). And you get $40 handset subsidy on choose20 as well.

Still adds up to $1000 or $1150 though..

While it's not "avail on prepay"  there is probably nothing stopping you using it as a basic call/sms device with prepay but 3g data services will be unavailable.

At the very worst, get the on-account, break your plan and "transfer your number" to prepay which will still use the same simcard.

The data plan is a prequisite to purchase an iPhone, and there are ETCs ($160) associated with the data plan as well.

Where does it say a data plan, or any plan, is a prerequisite?

------------------

To purchase an iPhone 3G with no plan you'll need to visit a Vodafone retail store.

iPhone only iPhone 8GB iPhone 16GB

$979 $1129
------------------

Buy the iPhone for $979 or $1129, put in your prepay SIM

done!

The answer straight from Vodafone is in this topic. You can use for voice and SMS but not for data as the iPhone is using a special APN just for it.
