OK I'm being hypothetical...

I have a first generation phone (obviously unlocked).

If I updated it to firmware 2.0 which is now available, it would be locked again and need activating...

Could I walk into a VF store, wave my phone around and ask them to activate this phone on my current plan?   In other words, "Here's a phone I purchased outright, just not from you - can you please connect it to my current plan and number"?

Just hypothetical of course.....

I believe they used different methods of locking the phone for each software update. I believe the phone would work just fine on the VF network, but installing 2.0 and unlocking would be your job. I read somewhere, though this may have been superseded by now, that it's impossible to update once unlocked.
