I have VFX on a Trixbox server at home, with an Auckland number. One of the benefits I see of using VoIP is that it allows you to divorce physical location from numbers and calling areas. For example, I have a second trunk setup with an Australian VoIP provider that allows me to make essentially free "local" calls in Australia, as well as the NZ VFX service I use.
I recently rung World Exchange to ask for a second number to be added to my account, and they were all keen to add this until I asked for the number to be outside Auckland. Why is this? I was surprised that it isn't possible. I assume its not a technical problem but rather a commercial decision. Am I right? And if so, whats the reasoning? I have read plenty of posts on here and elsewhere from people that have a service in Auckland say, and are actually physically located in Wellington. Does that mean they are doing it on the sly without telling World Exchange, or are there different rules for a single account versus second number?
Just curious really, as obviously there is a way around it - I just sign up with another service provider that offers a local number in the region I want, and set up a third trunk.
