Hi

 

One of our offices have moved we wanted to keep the same fax number but were advised we couldn't, assuming its on a different exchange?

 

So I asked Digital Mobile if we could keep the old number and get it forwarded to the new fax number but were advised that this couldn't be done and they could only forward faxes to a 3rd party fax service.

 

Is this really the case that what I asked cant be done?

Assuming these are analogue NEAX lines you can't move the numbers between NEAX exchanges. You can however Customerlink the numbers so they will point to your new number (which can be on a different exchange) at a cost of $20 + GST per month plus call costs which is the same cost all providers pay.

 

As you haven't said anything about what type of lines you have I've made the assumption they're wholesale Spark lines on a NEAX. If they're Vodafone analogue lines using their hardware all of the above does not apply.

This just sounds like Vodafone being stupid and saying "it's not possible" because they don't support faxing on their VoIP services.

Assuming it is a Spark wholesale line you could technically port the number to a VOIP line, but reliability can vary depending on the fax machine and what's terminating the VOIP. I haven't dealt with that stuff for a few years, and it appears we don't officially support it, so maybe someone else here can comment on reliability of fax on Voda VOIP. This assumes you have, or can get, a decent broadband connection as well.

I may be getting the specifics wrong here because it's been too long but I believe there is also a limitation on wholesale in customer linking a number to a faxability number where you loose the tone that makes it actually work as faxability.

 

Seriously though analogue lines are going to start going. This will be an increasing challenge across all providers for customers who wish to continue to have fax.

When you customer link you won't get the distinctive ring from the faxability. But that's only a problem if the line is shared i.e is for both calling and faxing. If you need distinctive ring, I guess you could get a new line, add a new faxability number, and then customer link to that new faxability number.

 

But what @gaddman posted is the answer...

Or the 2talk equivalent of course. Both will allow you to port your current local number, and then get faxes by email.

 

Faxing just needs to die. While I don't agree with Vodafone's approach where they are essentially slamming people's numbers across to their VoIP service, it is at least making people wake up and realise it isn't the 1980's any more. It's doctors, pharmacy's and accountants that are keeping this alive. Even most lawyers will accept digital copies in the interim until they get the originals.

There has been no mention of Faxability in this thread.

 

You can't Customerlink to a Faxability number though because a Faxability number is only a virtual number (like a Customerlink) and not a real number. Interestingly a Faxability number can paired with a PSTN number on another exchange, meaning you can get a psuedo Customerlink service without call forwarding charges.

While true one thing I vividly recall from my time in the front line taking calls is I got very few people be they techs or customers calling me about their faxability service. It was usually my fax line or my fax number. I would be pleasantly surprised to hear that this had changed.

 

 

 

It may well be my post is utterly irrelevant as it may well be a dedicated POTS line. Until that is ruled out I personally wouldn't be inclined to ignore it as a possibility and others had covered other possible explanations.
