Port completed yesterday, but I had an IOU on vodafone before porting.

I know its unlikly, but is there anything they do about the amount?

Unless you have approached VF and told them what you are doing, and they said that was ok, or similar, then I have to agree with johnr.

Yes, shame on you for not paying back the $5 IOU to the fair and honest multinational corporation! They take every opportunity they can to bring prices down and make your life easier. They would NEVER take advantage of a loophole like that in order to extract more money from now you would they!?

Seriously guys Yell

I would assume that its cheaper to write off the IOUs that are never repaid (dead SIM, discarded SIM, ported account etc).

I wouldn't worry about it, but if it's eating you, walk in to a Vodafone store, or anywhere that takes Vodafone payments, pay the $5 and ask for a receipt.

$5 says no one will actually be willing/able to take the payment against your old number, and will ask you to call a helpdesk (i.e. they will fob you off).

So I say, why bother...

I called them while I was out and the person who I spoke to, who sounded canadian and I could hear them ok so I doubt it was egypt said that it would stop the port from happening and the only way to pay it is to put a $20 topup onto it.

Then I asked at the vodafone shop in the mall and they said that they couldnt stop the port happening over an amount owed and that there was nothing they could do to stop it, and they couldnt take the $2 anyway.

Somehow I think the shop knew more then the call center rep

Correct: An outstanding amount is not supposed to prevent a port.

I can confirm porting to Vodafone from Telecom with a $150 outstanding account, and the port still happened. (Obvously I paid the account afterwards).

Correct, outstanding monies owed, as per the number portability agreement is NEVER meant to stop customers from porting OUT from a Telco's network.

If they stop the port because of this they are violating the law and can be held accountable by the Telecommunications commissioner.

Note - I'm not saying you should ever steal from a price gorging multinational of course...

Vodafone representative on the phone said I cant pay it without paying a $20 top up, and _thats_ not going to happen

If they want the $2, they can always call/text me since thats how they communicate. I was going to be cheeky and give vodafone store a gold coin but they looked busy and stressed, prob as a result of a certain new phone.

I have, I fail to see how this makes me dishonest at all since I have tried to see if I need to pay it back.

For them to expect me to pay $20 to pay off the $2 and provide mis-information that it would affect the port IMO is dishonest on vodafones part. If someone PMs me I will give them my number so they can look up the CSR to let them know they were wrong.

If the port hadn't happened and I could have ended up spending $20 I did not need to do so.
