We are on Vodafone out at Kiwitea (Manawatu), very near the exchange, about 400meters away.   The house has a demarkation point and Cat3 or Cat5 to the first Jack.   I have removed all the house wiring (just the Cat5 connected Jack) and just had one phone and the ADSL Modem.  When I pick up the phone the internet stops.  I hang up and wait a bit and the internet starts (Checking with a ping to www.clear.net.nz).   I have a clear POTs line, no crackles etc.  Although when the internet is connected I can just hear the hiss of the modem, even with multiple filters in line.  I was getting 15MBits download on speedtest.net

I have tried

  1. Another modem of the same type, no improvement
  2. Two other types of modem.  One ADSL2+ and one ADSL, no improvement.  ADSL connected at 5MBit
  3. Fitted in many different plug in filters - no improvement
  4. Fitted a wire in Filter - no improvement.
  5. Connected to extension jack on other side of house that is connected to the filtered output of wirein filter

The only option I can think of is a problem between the demarkation point and into the exchange.

Is there anything else I could check?  Or any advice.

Mike

Do you definitely have the filters connected correctly? The only real plausible scenario based on your description is faulty or incorrectly installed filter(s).

How are your filters configured? On the phone side, modem side, or both?

I'd say it's got to be a filtering issue. 400m from the cabinet and ADSL @ 5Mbps? Something is not right there though. At that distance (if it really is that distance) you should have around 20Mbps or more downstream, and should be able to get a good VDSL connection too.

Possibly your line takes a long trip from exchange to your place, or there may be a physical issue with the line somewhere. Which ISP are you with?

OP mentions Vodafone and that he gets 15mbps with his regular modem.

Sorry - I obviously didn't read that properly. I did see 5Mbps though in the second part of that post - possibly a typo?

Looks like it's just an ADSL modem, not 2+, so 5mbps is probably about right for that (hardware limited).

But anyway, this sounds exactly like a filtering problem.

Its a vodafone connection.  The wire in filter is one with the three pairs coming out.   Orange/OrangeWhite to Line and Green/GreenWhite to Modem, and Blue/BlueWhite to Phones.   I have connected two 2 wire BT Jacks to the wall, one to each and labeled them accordingly.   The modem will not connect up if connected to the wrong BT jack.  There are no phones before the filter anymore.

ADSL got 5, 2+ was on 15.

Could be water in the cable outside. Had that in the distant past and it would crap out whenever there was a load on the line or it rang. Guess youre gonna have to call it in as a fault in any case.

Or look at a VDSL upgrade which I think means they move you to VOIP so no longer an issue.

Yes VOIP is an option.  They have a diabetic child and need a corded phone plugged in all the time on POTS.  With no cellphone it is a challenge.   May end up on VOIP with a UPS.  Cellphone site to come in the next 2 years they say.

What was Vodafone's reply when you lodged what looks like a fault?

it sounds to me like you have done all the checks at your end. Log a fault, make it clear the rep the symptoms. hopefully they log it through correctly.

Will be the filtering on the other end. It's rare but can flake or a minor bridge.

I've heard of this sort of thing before, hio77's got the right idea. Call in, describe your fault in detail, and note that the issue is related to the phone line being used.

Odds are the voltage change is messing with the line characteristics and causing the DSL to drop and resync, or it may not even be able to sync if the fault is causing high frequency noise on the line (that your filter will be stopping you from hearing). Bit of an odd suggestion, but if you know anyone who has the tools, put a test butt across the line in monitoring mode before the DSL filter, and try making a call to get the DSL to drop. In theory you should hear the DSL on the line, and when the call happens, you should hear the DSL drop and try and sync. You could probably just disable the microphone on an old handset and use that as your test earpiece for this if you were feeling extra keen.
With that said, the Chorus tech should be able to sort that one out and at a minimum set you up with a temp fix to improve it pretty quickly.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

Further news on this fault.  Chorus Contractor been yesterday and wanted to rewire the house again, he was sure it was the in house wiring.   I had already tested with spilter at the demarkation point (temp setup on the Veranda) and the fault happened when I picked up the POTs phone (no house wiring connected at all).

He tested the cable to the exchange and found it has a 27 Ohm fault only 30 meters from the demarkation point, this was at the top of the pole at the front of the property.  He reterminated it and the internet works when the POTs line is in use.  Chorus contract came the same day the client called Vodafone, but found the fault the next morning.  Good news in the end.

Just an option too if there is no mobile coverage - just use 2degrees with WiFi calling. It is seamless and works well.

That's an interesting one. I'll file that one away in mind....
