Hi.

We have a customer using Vodafone UFB and has ordered a static IP. Apparently it's assigned via DHCP, but we are not getting it assigned.

We have just been told static IP's can only be assigned to the Vodafone Devices, which sounds like nonsense to me.

Can someone confirm? @mikehales

Surely not...I know of plenty of Vodafone VDSL connections with Static IPs using different routers with no issue, why would UFB be any different?

Correct, not based on the "Vodafone devices". The "Static IP's" are a DHCP reserved IP to your connection.

If you DM the account details and contact info I can have a look into the provisioning of the account.

As per my reply, I have fixed this and this IP will now be assigned to this connection with 2 minute power cycle of the customers router.

Any issues yell out.

Great response! Since everyone is in a good news mood, how about a laugh at the past.
We took up Fibre-X very early, and had various drama getting the fixed IP working (& annoyed at having to pay for it after no charge for well over 15 years ... renewal coming up ... hummm).
Most interesting was when all was chugging along for a few hours, then nothing "The Internet is down!" (Wow! I think others would have noticed!) After confirming it wasn't me (could ping the VF gateway, but no further - yea! I didn't kill the Internet) and an hour on the phone to first level support, who was trying hard, but totally out of depth, turned out someone had reserved an IP for me that was in their dynamic range. Only a matter of time before someone else was dynamically offered the same IP.
All was fixed, and has been working perfectly for almost two years now!
Question - do we want a TV service where you can't easily fast-forward the ads?

I have had a static ip on fibreX for many years for 5 dollars extra. But as I'm shifting to a new place with fibre was enquiring with vodafone about a fibre max plan with static ip and was informed was going to be an extra 23 dollars for the static ip. (because it was on fibre) Is this correct? or normal?

I got told it's $20.88 (exclusive) per month when I inquired after switching to fibre from HFC. It's quite a bit more than literally any other ISP charges.

Once a static IP address is defined on a Vodafone DHCP server - is there any on-going cost?
(edit - perhaps it is a disincentive to run any service on your IP? That would be a very 20th century view of the Internet.)

Your right, its on a dhcp server anyway. part of there ip range fenced off for static allocation. Having a look at options as over $250 per year for fixed ip with vodafone seems a lil rich as an ongoing cost. bigpipe is a one off $45 cost for the length of the account, trustpower is $5 per month and orcon is $10 per month. they are the only ones I've looked at so far.

Do you really need a static IP, can you not use a dynamic dns setup.

Personally I do. I host a few Linux mirrors (of which I add more every day), and for the likes of CentOS's MSYNC mirrors and the master Fedora mirrors (tier 1), you do need a static IP

Interesting to see that Vodafone charge for a static IP address on cable. I remember (when I worked at TCL, anyway) that on cable you got one static IP for free. When did they start charging for it?

When they went to DHCP allocation with the Technicolor cable modem / router / AP combo thing. Kept charging with FibreX.
I suspect they had to give us a static IP back in the day because they had no mechanism to run DHCP over the Surfboards????
