Hey all you GZers!

I was doing a little bit of routing with DN42, just learning a little about how BGP works before I deploy it for real with Vultr, and whilst I was looking at the way traffic flows over public networks and noticed that there seems to be a transparent proxy on the Vodafone Fiber (real, not HFC) network. Is the proxy still a thing, and moreso, wasn't that a HFC thing, in which case, why am I seeing it on my outbound connections?

How are you determining from that traceroute that there's a transparent proxy?

A transparent proxy wouldn't actually be a device that routes traffic, so you wouldn't see it in a traceroute

From your MTR to softlayer.com what makes you think there is a transparent proxy ?

I may have mis-spoken. It doesn't appear to be a transparent proxy, however it is within RFC1918 address space, so please forgive me for assumptions. In any case, why is there private address space on the public internet?

Vodafone traceroutes have presented their internals on rdns for ages now.

imo it looks horrible and confusing for many, I'm sure they have a reason for it though.

There is about 10ms difference there, hardly is anything.

Based on your traceroute, looks like possibly wifi to your router.

Latency past the first hop doesn't look like fibre, DSL? seems a little high unless your not auckland based.
