It's only started doing this today... The internet works fine for about 30 minutes then all of a sudden, I get address not found when trying to access websites and the internet stops working! To restore it I have to reset my modem and router, then it works fine for another 30 minutes or so until it craps out again. I can ping the modem and the router but websites or other connections to the web don't work.

I looked at the modem logs and found this:

 
1970-01-01 00:04:243-CriticalD002.0DHCP FAILED - Request sent, No response
1970-01-01 00:04:043-CriticalD001.0DHCP FAILED - Discover sent, no offer received
(It seems to think its 1970 for some reason.)

So what does DHCP failed mean? How can I fix it?

Not experiencing this where I am, but if it does to you, may be the router or the modem issue, try and eliminate by plugging in the modem directly to the PC and see how long it last. My need to get the new one, TCL tech support should be able to help you with that.

Have you tried just resetting the router to see if that fixes the problem? Not all routers work well behind a Telstra Clear cable modem and even if you can ping the router and reach it's admin pages, try resetting it anyway to see if it fixes the issue. One theory is that there is lots of ARP traffic on the cable network and not all routers can handle it that well.

As I said, I have to reset it every time it screws up.


I think I fixed it though. I set my DNS and IP and stuff in my LAN's TCP/IP bit and it's been good for a while.

On cable modem you must set your IP settings on the router or PC directly connected to the Internet. There's no DHCP on this service.

Yeah, it was set on the router. Just not on the PC.

You weren't clear whether you had to reset the router AND the modem, or whether you had tried just resetting the router by itself.

So I was trying to find out if the original poster had tried resetting JUST the router, instead of resetting the router AND the modem.

But it doesn't matter now if the problem is fixed...
