Anybody else noticed that the MX for clear.net.nz is not responding?

They are still supposed to be forwarding mail - can't do that without a live MX ..

The paradise.net.nz MX record points to the same host.

zuul.ihug.net is the MX for vodafone.{net,co}.nz and was dead last night when I looked but back up now.

The helpdesk said there was an email outage for hosted domains, but denied all knowledge of a clear.net.nz problem.

Offered to re-apply my address to forward to ...

Had no clue what an MX does and "tier 2 doesn't talk to customers"...

I'm still unable to telnet on port 25 to 203.118.158.229 (mx.clear.net.nz/mx.paradise.net.nz) and outbound mail to this server is sitting in our Exchange queue retrying.

EDIT: Looking at the delayed messages in our queue, it has been down since at least Tuesday afternoon. Nothing on the Vodafone network status page.

Yip definitely an issue. Gmail is throwing back this error to senders. It will keep trying to 45 more hours.

The response was:

The recipient server did not accept our requests to connect. Learn more at https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7720 [mx.clear.net.nz. 203.118.158.229: timed out]

Thanks for explaining why my clear.net traffic has got jammed. Mine is now coming through slowly, but in random sequence: I'm seeing replies to replies before I see the original post. (Messages with attachments are taking a particularly long time: I know because the sender has asked why I haven't replied yet.)

Traffic from github getting jammed is causing me real pain: as soon as github polls and sees a 'message stuck' status, it immediately inactivates my account, and it's awkward to re-activate.

I've been using a clear.net address for more than 20 years. All my subscriptions/forums use it; too many to even be sure which, let alone whether they'll let me continue the subscription under a different email.

Do you think voda are eventually going to kill off the clear.net domain?

Let's think about it ...

  • Benefits to Vodafone from keeping clear.net.nz 'working': goodwill from mostly years-ago former customers, no monetary value whatsoever
  • Costs to Vodafone: small but non-zero and slowly but inexorably increasing

What do you think the bean-counters will say?

Yes, I still have a small amount of mail still coming to my old clear.net.nz address, mostly for accounts that have proved difficult / impossible to change. I am resigned to the probability that it will vanish before too much longer.
Sigh.

my bet is they will spend less & less time/money into keeping it running . Expect zero maintenance .
One day it will fail & they just wont bother to fix it. Just a matter of time :-)

Plan for the worst, dont get caught out
