I'm on FibreX and I've been getting insane ping spikes (1000+), but it only happens when I play online games, thereby making them unplayable:here.

It's strange because as soon I get off a game it seems to go back to normal.

I have no idea what to do. I've tried disabling my PC firewall, modem firewall, opening ports, DMZ, etc. But nothing seems to help.

General Info:

- FibreX

- Connection type: Wireless 2.4GHz

- Modem: Ultra Hub (H500-t)

Any ideas?

I'm on WiFi, i'm unable to play wired at the moment. I know it's technically worse, but I mean it shouldn't be this bad right?

Depends on how congested the 2.4Ghz is can you change to 5Ghz?

There's 13 devices on the 2.5GHz band. And not at the moment, my network adapter doesn't support 5GHz unfortunately.

Do you think it's worth getting an adapter which supports 5GHz and trying that?

If there is 13 devices just on your network on 2.4 then yes you need to be on 5Ghz or even better Ethernet

Remember Wi-Fi is shared bandwidth with other wireless networks around you not just your network

Your problem is 2.4GHz WiFi. Get a 5GHz 802.11ac adapter and use that instead if you must use WiFi otherwise Ethernet for gaming always wins.

i bet you are saturating the 2.4ghz spectrum with your upload or download which is causing the increase in ping, you would see the same thing if you downloaded or uploaded a large file.

I would look at a better adapter that supports 5ghz ac wifi with a speed of 867mbps, as that gives you a bit of overhead (they will likely be called an AC1200 adapter) which are about $50 from PBTech

Even on 5ghz you will have a lot more lag, as WiFi has other issues
- each device takes turn to talk as it can only talk to one at a time
- not only can WiFi talk to one thing at a time, it can only either talk or listen. While it's listening it cannot talk and vice versa
- 5ghz range is shorter so if you're too far away it could be worse than 2.4
- though 2.4 is extremely prone to interference while 5 is not

So yes 5ghz will improve lag assuming you are close enough to get signal

But wired is what you want. Good luck

As others have said, gaming over WiFI is always going to be a worse experience than wired, it's just a matter of how much worse.
