I'm on one of the old red plus super mobile plans which gives me 40gb data per month, with no mention in my contract about throttling for tethering/hotspot.

Yet in Taupo this week when I tether my phone to my laptop the internet becomes completely unusable. I am also unable to download torrents on my mobile. Attempted to download a unix ISO via android BitTorrent app for a home lab machine and it simply wont download.

Is anyone aware of 4g throttling occurring on Vodafone? If Vodafone are breaking my on account contract I would expect to be able to break the remaining 12 month contract without being penalised.

I would take a guess and say the Taupo cell sites are getting smashed being a long weekend - everyone is there on holiday right?

As for torrents, I would assume there is some policy in the Vodafone terms that say they can 'manage traffic' or something if they choose to. But I would actually say the issue with torrents would be the firewalling on mobile networks rather than any traffic management.

@grasshoper It's the long weekend and holiday areas cells will be getting smashed and Taupo is always one of those areas

So no way it's throttling cause you are tethering your handset

Taupo gets totally smashed every holiday, to the point where phones are virtually unusable.

Maybe the laptop is downloading lots of software updates. And that is why the Internet becomes unusable while tethering.
