This is an old question, and for all we know Vodafone always assured those data cards are not locked.

I've just bought an AT&T Pay As you Go SIM (US$19.95 for 5GB data on prepay) and the VMC says "Please insert correct SIM card". I am using the XU870.

Meanwhile I am using a Pocket PC as a modem when not in range of a wireless network (hard not to find one around here in san Francisco).

Wow, that's terrible. I wasn't aware that we were locking any data devices. I suspect it was the software version that card was flashed with. Relatively easy to fix but a real pain while you're overseas Undecided

Hi there,

no, we don't lock any devices, handset or data.

Cheers

This one is. Maybe because it is one of the first of this model?

Nope, none of our data cards are locked. It may be a problem with the SIM or with the firmware or some other problem, but the card itself is not locked to the Vodafone network.

Happy to get Joe to give you a call about it if that'll help.

Cheers

Paul

I'd be more than happy to try some troubleshooting with you but I have the feeling, Mauricio, you're quite capable.

Try http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-data/devices/novatel-xu870.jsp and upgrade your firmware, this should fix the problem.

Thanks for the link. You can download VMC for Windows and Mac OS there, but when you click on "Firmware" it actually lists the release notes for VMC - but no firmware download there.

Sorry about that Mauricio. I just made a call and apprently the XU870 doesn't have any intenal software to modify (hard coded). There's no possible way to lock that card even if we wanted to via software. He advised that AT&T are quite versed in their lock techniques and are able to lock simcards. He also advised trying a different sim in the device and seeing if the fault still occurs.

I tried the Telecom SIM card and got the same result.

I have the AT&T SIM card working no a Pocket PC - direct push enabled and I used it as a modem too. I am using the Pocket PC most of the time anyway since there's wireless networks around the hotel and the convention centre. But it would be handy to actually be "free".

Oh well. Since I don't have a Vodafone account anymore I might give this card to someone who would use it then.

Thanks for asking around.

Not a problem, sorry for the trouble. I'll keep this noted in case this pops up again. Rather unlucky that this should happen to you of all people Wink

Hi Mauricio,
Try the Novatel client software instead of VMC. I haven´t tried it with an AT&T SIM but there is no reason why it shouldn´t work.  These datacards are definately not locked.
Cheers

Thanks Maximus but no joy. Downloaded and installed the software, and even thought the OS sees the modem on COM12 the software says "no device".

This is not urgent now, since I can still connect via Bluetooth or USB.

It may be a software problem... The LED is blinking purple, which means EDGE service available, indicating probably the SIM card is working fine. But the VMC says invalid SIM card, and the Mobilink can't find the device.

I tried manually creating a connection but it didn't work.

No worries...
