Hi all

Ok - so, I'm evaluating a vehicle GPS Tracker that to be honest seems bloody awesome if I can get past this hurdle.

The tracker is self contained and has both vibration sensor and GPS tracking along with Cell Tower Triangulation in it. So great for motorcycles / cars / jetskis / trailers etc etc.  If the Tracker gets disturbed (with the Key fob away from the unit) - after a minute it calls your phone to alert you. You can then open the app and track your stolen device. If you have the fob within a few meters it ignores the movement.

The unit is from Europe and has a global sim in it from Tele2

First time it was used it called on a "private number" - not  a problem I thought - just hadn't fully registered on the vodafone network.

Second time I tested it a few hours later - it rang through to my phone with the correct caller ID which was great because it was working as expected.

Since then for a couple of weeks every call from the tracker has been "private number"

Now, we're going to be marketing this device as it is a good cost-effective item. (i.e not chinese aliexpress nor 2G).

I've been emailing the original manufacturer who have then in turn been on to TELE2 who have asked me  for information about the call times (a party and b party) which are all well and good but I don't seem to be able to get a straight answer from them for something I thought would be very simple to determine.

Just so you know, just now I tested the sim card from the GPS tracker in a phone and it did the same .

So, my question is, is the number being blocked by TELE2, or by Vodafone and is there any way to find out ? Is there a code i can "inject" into the sim to change this or is this at TELE2's discretion only.

And why is it so hard to find out whats going on

Sorry I'm not telecoms network savvy.

Hope this is as much information as you need.

Worst case scenario is we supply NZ vodafone pre-pay sims with them but that does complicate things a little.

Cheers

Chris

Found the reason but not the fix.

Vodafone New Zealand unfortunately  don't provide CLIR(Calling Line Identity Restriction) for roaming  to Spark.

Sim card that tracker uses is running through Vodafones network to call back to europe and not providing CLIR to spark. dumb really.

You do realise how roaming works right and how signalling (along with all data traffic and most voice traffic) still has to go via the home network? Blaming Vodafone NZ is not necessarily fair.

Obviously I realise it has to go back to its home country but in terms of how the mobile network actually works - no i have no idea. Hence me asking the question here.

(If i knew i'd not be asking the question now would I)

I was just repeating what the tech support for the Tele2 people had reported back - in fact i'll copy and paste below.

Bear in mind, the gps tracker is using Vodafone's network on a euro sim and I am using a spark mobile account this is the email

"Our Roaming partner Vodafone New Zealand unfortunately  don't provide CLIR(Calling Line Identity Restriction) for roamer to Spark. Since B party is belonging to Spark network. Calls from an inbound roamer on VF network to a Spark number will not be sent with CLIR."
