Went to a Vodafone shop yesterday to sign up for Vodafone TV (already a broadband and mobile customer) with Sky Sport. Figured they would give me a Vodafone TV box and I would go home, plug it in and I would be up and running.

No, they don't have the boxes so have to be shipped from Auckland. Disappointed, but said OK and they said they would let me know the next day how long this would take.

This morning I get a message saying they would activate the service on the 18th and send the box after that. So, assuming couriers are not running late (due to xmas) that will be almost two weeks from time of order. If they are running late then probably have to wait until after Xmas, which could turn into next year.

In a time where most services are activated within minutes of swiping your credit card this just seems unbelievable.

The reason I went with Vodafone was that to go to sky directly requires installing a satellite dish, which I didn't really want. I have just spoken to sky and they said the can have this installed within 2 days. This just makes Vodafone look a bit incompetent.

Anyone on here from Vodafone that can get in touch?

If this is as good as Vodafone can do I will cancel my order and get Sky directly.

PS: The reason for wanting Sky is that I have just got out of hospital after and accident and have pretty badly broken leg, which took several hours of surgery to put back together, and now I have ~3 months on the couch to look forward too. So, I figured I would become an expert in NZ Cricket (plus whatever other sports are on).

You could have bought a Gen 2 online from Voda and had in two days or got one from Noel Leeming. Its sounds as if you have bought on account and will be sent a Gen 1 - I would personally avoid this product.

I would cancel and just buy Gen 2 from retail store. Managed via the portal and you don't have to deal with Voda CSR (a real joy).

Gen 1

  • lacks bluetooth remote with microphone (IR only)
  • Ethernet only (no 5ghz wifi)
  • Is currently running an older version of the software but is promised to be updated
  • Requires a current Vodafone plan (gen 2 works on any ISP)

I wouldn't say its bad and should be avoided though, it is quite a similar experience and works well enough

In terms of cost, Vodafone broadband packages with Gen 1 included cost about $5 extra per month than not having VF TV (so $60 per year for box rental, the Gen 2 can be purchased outright for $179 (equivalent to 3 years Gen 1 rental)

I am not opposed to buying the Gen2 unit, I can have one today. But, I have been told they cannot activate my service until the 18th, so it will be useless for the next 9 days.

P.S. I love my Gen 2 and that works well enough for me.

Gen 2 is activated instantly via the portal, there is no interaction with existing accounts. And it works on any Internet connection.

I cannot find any pricing for the Sky channels by doing this way. I can only find the pricing when bundling with Vodafone broadband.

Pricing is on the vtv.nz portal but in short it is the same as normal sky with same price perks (e.g free soho with movies/sport)

As well as movies or Sport, Entertainment need as well for free SoHo.

Unless someone’s read these forums/ word of mouth, people are not going to realise VF sends different box to on account orders, most people wouldn’t ask, would just expect latest to be sent.
