Hi there.

I don't exactly know how Telstra can not pay any attention to how traffic on their network is being routed.
Here is a very nice example:

----# traceroute ftp.nz.debian.org
traceroute to ftp.citylink.co.nz (202.7.6.9), 30 hops max, 52 byte packets
...

12  zidane.citylink.co.nz (202.8.44.4)  35.254 ms  36.352 ms  36.975 ms

This is absolutely stupid!!!
And yes, I know iHug have their own Debian server.
It's about the principle.

Telstra don't peer at WIX so traffic destined to citylink's FTP goes via America.

How do you explain the routing to www.citylink.co.nz then?
And if there really isn't a direct exchange then route it via Australia but for dog's sake not the US!!

That would be because ftp.citylink.co.nz is actually hosted in the states, not in NZ, while the www.citylink.co.nz server is local.

Check out this trace I did from a server in the US:

Because the cost incurred on the ftp is greater for Citylink for ISP's that dont peer I guess. The FTP is hosted in Wellington.

This is on a telstra fibre link, which is wholesaled through Citylink anyway

H:\>tracert ftp.citylink.co.nz

Tracing route to ftp.citylink.co.nz [202.7.6.9]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     2 ms     3 ms     3 ms  10.73.199.250
  2     2 ms     8 ms     5 ms  203.167.229.1
  3     2 ms     5 ms     1 ms  anycast.wix.net.nz [202.7.0.7]
  4     3 ms     1 ms     1 ms  ftp.citylink.co.nz [202.7.6.9]

I can't remember the reason why it goes through America but I think thats the only route available to ftp.citylink.co.nz for ISP's that don't peer at WIX and was done that way to make a point.

The ftp  is actually hosted in multiple places.. WIX, APE, Overseas etc via an Anycast address (same ip address)
