I just recently joined Vodafone and I would receive a $200 Account Credit, but when I got my first bill I noticed that I had to pay GST on top of that $200 Credit and in reality I only received $173.91. Is this legit? I thought I would receive a full $200 and had no idea that you have to pay GST on top of this. Isn't this misleading? I've never had to pay GST on previous Credits from ISP's or Power Company Credit's before. So you aren't going to get a genuine $200 Account Credit from Vodafone when you sign up to pay off $200 worth of services?

You will likely find all itemised lines are less GST. And it is accounted at the end when not in credit.

So you will get 200 Incl GST credit, You don't 'pay' it as such as there is no debits with it added to yet.

All adjustments exclude GST but will be added in the month’s total and applicable GST calculated.

Else they would advertise $230 credit.

If they bill you excluding the GST, and then take the credit off, and then add GST to any owing balance it may work out.

Looks a confusing way to do it, would look simpler if they did a GST included charge and took off a GST included discount.

Need to know if it will be taken off bill before GST added, otherwise could be dodgy.

If someone gives you a gift card and you buy something for $200 with it, does that $200 include GST?

I don’t think it’s fair how they advertise it and I’m sure in the past I have received the whole amount not GST taken off . I haven’t had a power company do this either. They should state excluding gst

Hmm thanks I understand it, thanks for the explanation, I rang the call centre to ask and they couldn't give me an answer and the reason I thought I was paying the GST is because I had my prepay phones changed to postpay and was supposed to have the balance + part prepay plans accounts credit transferred and the credit is about the same as the amount of the GST and that balance has disappeared for some reason and that's why I thought I was paying for the GST. My overall credit balance is less than what it should be. I can only assume that's the reason why my balance is low because the credit has disappeared but I thought I was paying for the GST. Thanks.

Slingshots invoices never looked confusing at all.

Say your bill is $450 + GST

$450 + GST = $517.50 less $200 (inc GST) discount = $317.50 inc GST

$450 - $173.9 discount (ex GST) = $276.09 + GST = $317.50 inc GST

Works out the same

It doesn't help that on the invoice also that it doesn't state I would be receiving that GST as a credit anywhere on the invoice PDF file.

Got a call from Vodafone and the $30 was credited to me for the missing balance from Prepay so it's all sorted. In addition they gave me an extra $120 goodwill credit. Pretty good now.

No, its $200 in lieu of cash, its not a good or a service. The $200 good or service you buy will include GST

I would expect the 200 to be gst exempt, like roaming charges or early termination charges, and taken from the total of the bill. But I'm not a lawyer and I'm not going to bother reading all the terms and conditions this time. :)

Nothing wrong with it at all. Some companies decide to show GST inclusive amounts on their bills, others show GST exclusive. In this case Vodafone has decided to show the GST exclusive amount so makes sense they would exclude GST from the discount amount (as they would for all other amounts showing on their bills). Move on, nothing to see here.
