As the title suggests.
For the life of me, I can’t see anywhere in the app where I can find the GST receipt for
top ups.

I was in between jobs so switched my usually “on account” mobile to pre pay and the latest job I have comes with a seperate phone.... but it’s still on its way so having to use my personal
number in between....and of course claim back.

I’m always missing the 8pm cut off for live chat.
I don’t even want to begin thinking about calling them during the day.... pure pain and probably a half hour of life I won’t get back (besides, I’m busy working from home using the mobile, to be waiting on hold.

If you purchase a top up voucher online hopefully they emailed you the voucher.
Used to be the easiest way was to get one from the supermarket, or petrol station.

I actually wonder if a topup is actually "spend" from a tax perspective - or at least GST perspective. e.g. you topup $20 and spend $10 on a roaming pack, that wouldn't have GST in it?

Of course it does - the top up is for $10 inc GST. Vodafone takes $10 of cash when you pay and gives you a reciept for $8.67 + $1.33 GST. It takes likely the revenue (less GST) as you use the topup through the 12 months.

No different to buying $50 petrol. Or a Big Mac combo.
You are paying before you consume.

Anyway, thoughts on a receipt?
I can’t excatley present a copy of the text message. Mind you I could just print that out and manually put on the VF gst number....

From the IRD GST Guide...

The supplier should treat tokens, stamps and vouchers as a supply for GST purposes at the time a customer buys them.

GST can be accounted for when the customer actually exchanges the voucher for the monetary value of the goods or services bought, if both suppliers agree.

In other words, both methods can be used. Vodafone used to offer roaming in Australia for the same rate as your pre-pay plan in New Zealand. Calls made in Australia were cheaper than calls made in New Zealand, because GST was not applied to those calls. Given it not known if GST is applicable or not at the time of purchase, it makes sense to delay returning GST until the credit is used.

I know lots of people who top up via voucher. For one, my sister does; she doesn't have a computer or a credit card.

You are only able to request a gst-invoice, more correctly called a tax invoice, if the value of the transaction is over $50 and if you are gst-registered. If you fulfill both criteria you can request a tax invoice.

most people will simply calculate the gst component for a commodity purchase.

Under $50 and you don't need a GST invoice, simply proof of the expense (in this case, credit card / debit card transaction).

Then it comes back to how you value your time? IE, if it's going to take you an hour to do, is it worth it for the amount you'll get back?

I have this issue when I'm doing my expenses for work. I am usually on the road seven weeks out of eight, so breakfast, lunch, dinner, rental cars, flights, motels etc all go on a corporate credit card. However with paying for parking it's just easier for me to use my own coins/card, as the process for getting an e-receipt from a parking meter in another town is just more hassle to me than the 50c or dollar that it cost me. Granted if you need the money or it's a substantial amount, I'd just search for the transaction so it highlights only that, then print, or convert to PDF and submit that?

per my previous answer, if you are spending over $50 and are gst-registered, then yes they can. Otherwise there is no need for this.

Are you aware that Inland Revenue do not need to sight receipts under $50 (if that’s what you are worried about)?

He's trying to claim the top up from work as an expense. Many companies won't pay expenses unless you have a GST receipt.

This thread has repeated itself numerous times over the years.

Companies don't provide GST invoices for prepay vouchers because GST is not charged at the time of purchase - this complicates things if you're simply trying to claim back the value as an expense. If you need a invoice/receipt for the actual figure to claim the best thing is to buy it from a physical retailer who can provide a receipt at the time of purchase.

On Skinny if you top up online you can download a GST receipt.
