Hi folks. Easy question (I think): how do we activate a SIM card that's ultimately used for an IoT device (electronic gate)? Do I need to insert on a mobile phone, and call 777 or can I call from another phone and give the card number to activate it?

Incoming call will not activate a connection

Just checking you are going to be using a Prepaid SIM?

Yes, it is a Prepaid SIM, on a Pay and Go (no monthly plan as it's only used for SMS notification from the gate).

I would put SIM into a handset call 777 to activate the number and then register it on the VodafoneNZ site so you get the SMS for setting up My Vodafone login and then pop SIM into the unit for the gate

Yes, that's what I've done before with another SIM but... I have to check the gate when I get there (extended bubble family) and if it uses a SIM card then will have a problem as I have only a microSIM phone and nanoSIM smartphone.

Ok, will see what happens when we get there.

Can be an issue with sim size to do that however.

There really needs to be a way to activate sims without trying to make a call. Cant even add them to the vodafone app without being able to receive an sms on the sim which is hard when its in a GPS tracker or something.

Don't know why they cant let you scan the barcode on the sim packaging in the app to activate or enter the numbers off the sim or something. Still, its a mobile data company stuck in the telco era.

The barcode on the packaging is just the SIM number and would be pretty easy to spoof...

A active mobile data connection will also activate a VodafoneNZ Prepaid mobile connection

What are you going to spoof?

I used to just pick up a data SIM and get it activated, not sure if they have those here.

A bit odd using a normal SIM card, not sure why one would provision a phone number to a gate - although I can imagine the conversation had by the spam callers would be interesting.

It uses SMS to notify of visitors. I would have suggested an IP device seeing it is within their network coverage, but...
