I have noticed on my VF bill, a monthly charge of $4.95 for Wiring and Maintenance.

I remember this being a good idea when we were on copper, but is it still necessary for a fibre connection?

There is about 100m of fibre running from the road to the house if that's important.

Personally I don't think it's worth it. Chorus / Your LFC own the fibre up to and including the ONT. From there you only have an ethernet cable & your router.
Save yourself $60/year and drop it.

My understanding was this this was always for the copper on "your" side of the demarcation line.

Quite often fibre installs include a connection from the ONT to the existing copper outlets so you can continue to use those sockets using the voice over fibre provided via the ONT.

Hmm, @coffeebaron set up some of my phone ports on a patch panel.

Perhaps I should be paying him $5/mth! :)

From what i recall, only Spark offers that function. All other rsp's offer voice from their own equipment - and if its reticulated back via the house copper, they dont own responsibility for that bit

If only Spark offer that, why has VF been charging me W&M since I moved to fibre?

Because you did'nt query it.

Honestly, all companies do it, if you don't query something, then they'll leave it regardless if its valid or not anymore.

Spark have been charging my FIL for services he never uses, he never queried it because he thought he was still on contract - turns out his contract ended over a year ago, but they kept on billing as if it was current.

Thats now changing, and hes off to another provider.

I wish you luck, hopefully it works out for you. I left Vodafone many years ago when I couldn't get them to cancel certain services after repeated attempts and assurances :/

All providers seem to get on the wiring and maintenance train, and I've had customers who have been actively paying it only to be told when there is a fault that they have to get an electrician to fix the internal wiring (which is what that damn maintenance money is for!)

When I got fiber at Tauranga Spark canceled the wiring maintenance part on the next bill automatically. Just got fiber installed at our Morrinsville place a week ago and will be interesting to see if Spark do the same next bill.

Hang on - if Vodafone doesn't support voice patched through your existing house wiring, then w&m is impossible to claim on for any VF customers on fibre. I think you have a very fair argument for a backdated refund - they haven't provided you with any service for that money

@nickb800 , it could even be illegal?

I've gone back through all my invoices, it wasnt always $4.95.

My first fibre invoice in Sep 2016, the charge is there at $3.95.

Oct 2016 its not there, but there is a $200 goodwill credit for all the problems with my home phone after installation.

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=204217

Nov 2016 the charge is back, and its been there every month since, increasing to $4.95 in Dec 2017.

That comes to $208.75, so all that goodwill has been cancelled out.

Any VF reps here who can explain what they do provide for that charge?

IANAL so can't comment on (il)legality, but certainly sounds dodgy.

Try the Vodafone complaints form on their website for your personal resolution, then a ComCom referral if you aren't satisfied that they are dealing with the systemic issues

Spark does not offer wire mantiance on fibre unless you have Intergrated wiring and opt in, since that's the only usecase there is for this service.
