Greetings,

An acquaintance has unfortunately forgotten her password to an existing Microsoft account. She's had the account for several years. Unfortunately, the recovery email is for a paradise address.

The Microsoft account has several years of correspondence and records related to her business.

Her memory has been fading, and the password is something she can no longer recall.

Is there anyone I can contact at Vodafone to somehow sort out a temporary forwarding arrangement for the paradise account in question. Basically, we just need to forward/access/capture the recovery code for the Microsoft account question. Obviously, once the Microsoft account is recovered we would update the recovery email.

Thanks in advance.

Probably not. They have stopped forwarding emails. Email services are all closed down.

You will have to get onto microsoft to get them to manually reset the password. I know of people that have had success with that and providing them with information. It's not an encryption key or anything so they are able to recover it. But as its a free service they have little reason to for people.

Does she have ANY devices that can still access that MS email a/c . Laptop , phone , old PC, tablet ?
If so, there might be some hope .

Also , Look in the browsers for saved passwords (& see if passes are saved in Win credential manager, & Outlook setup etc ) .
Sometimes a password is re-used for several things , so you my get lucky & find a saved password for something else that may work .

Be carefull you dont get that MS a/c locked after too many failed pass attempts .

Is there a Microsoft helpdesk that can be called who might be able to help?

If you explain the situation, they might be able to ask some security questions and assist.

I had my MyLotto account I hadn't used for a while tied to my old Paradise account. I'd forgotten my password to that, and couldn't use the reset password. In this instance I was able to call lotto support and have them update the account email

Thanks for the response.

So, emailing the old account appears to get bounced by the vodafone MX server. Which implies CC'ing a response (like the "User unknown ..." one), to a designated account temporarily is not out of the realms of possibility? (the original sender still gets the "nobody lives here anymore" response, and the original payload containing the recovery code can be delivered to someone who really needs it - assuming the rejection email is sent/received before the recovery code expires).

I don't imagine you guys are planning to un-park paradise.net.nz anytime soon?

The person in question has been a VF customer for years, using the old account for her business. It's just a really unfortunate situation that's happened.

I'd be happy to liase with whoever to sort out any technical details client-side.

2s job for anyone with the access to the DNS.....  fire up a basic mail server on a VM such as Hmail, point mx to it, let user grab their email, shut down server.

I wonder if they will let the domain expire

It would be a massive security fail if they let the domain expire and someone create a new email server to capture all the old paradise mail.

I doubt they would let the domain lapse for a long, long time - and they wouldn't stand up the mail server again either. Plenty of notice was given before these addresses were shut down.
