Just joined Xnet recently on Torrent plan and download speed between Midnight to 8am is sh*t, 10kbps. Thinking of changing to Pay Per Meg plan. Any comments?

Hey man.

Last month I had great month. I rocked 94gb in the month. Voip overseas, demos, etc... intense speeds.
However, now I am in the same boat. i can be getting 500kb at 11:59... and by 00:10 it's dropped to like 7kb.

Xnet have new management, so they've said, and that could it be. I've been told that xnet are buying more bandwidth soon. I'm giving them til after xmas to fix it... otherwise I'm leaving them hey.

Where are you based?

Cheers

Also having serious speed problems between Midnight and 8:00am. I am on Torrent plan. Was told by Xnet today that I might see an improvement by switching to the pay per meg plan as the two plans are on different routers. (The message stressed no guarantees tho').
Has anyone on the pay per meg plan any experience they can share of what sort of speed they get between midnight and 8:00am?

I was online around midnight. Downloading Adobe plugin @ 3.2k
My buddy on the pay per meg plan was getting 18k

However Xnet turned around and said the next hours for the 75gb will be 2am to 8am. That's B/S if u ask me. They told us that they are changing due to customer feedback. Seriously? Get a better excuse. the bottom line is that they promised us something and when we took it, it cost them 2 much to deliver. They didn't plan on people using the Torrent Plan.

Tell me if this is true, the guys @ Xnet told me that when we signed up for the Torrent Plan, we agreed that we won't be able to surf the net during off peak hours because the speed is dedicated to downloading and not browsing...

*sigh*

If you take a look at some older posts about this, the 2am->8am idea was suggested and most agreed that it would be the best way to reduce the impact the Torrent plan users had on Pay Per Meg users (before, the Torrent plan users activities resulted in pay per meg users not even being able to visit New Zealand websites, let alone international sites.)
Also note that it says up to 75Gb of free traffic, not 75Gb guaranteed taffic. Its exactly the same as your line speeds, they say "up to ADSL/ADSL2+ speeds" which means your line could only get 5Kb/s or it could get 23.9Mb/s (ADSL2+).So don't say "they promised us something", they only offered the option of possibly getting 75GB.
But yes its true they didnt plan on the amount of people choosing the Torrent plan and didn't implement effective measures to ensure that service was acceptable. If you only just joined in the last 4-5weeks, then you wern't around when the Torrent plan users were destroying ALL xnet customer's internet speeds because they were sharing the same bandwidth as pay per meg users and as a result causing everyone who wasnt Torrenting.
In addition to this 99.9% of it Torrenting is illegal activity which is also another reason why people have little regard for Torrent users who complain, I do acknowledge there are legal things that can be done. But in reality 99.9% of the content downloaded via Torrent's/P2P/Rapidshare/etc during 12-8am is illegal and like I already said, another reason why its considered non-important (why should Xnet have to risk legal action of any form, just to ensure you (and others) can get content illegally fast..?)

Please note the Torrent option is not suitable for people who surf the net or play on-line games between midnight and 8am: as speeds are affected by the P2P and downloading activity of other users.

Are you aware that if you've been with them for less than a year, you now face a $99 disconnection fee. Something they decided to add to their terms and conditions, but didn't bother informing anyone about. I thought companies were supposed to notify their customers of any changes to their terms and conditions.

No, you are not up for a disconnection fee because the service is failing to deliver.

I guess they just have done that since they know they are having massive churn at the moment with their crap service and they may be able to sucker some people into paying it since it appears there is a general ignorance about the CGA and contracts in the general population.

Kyro :
Hey dude, Thanks for that info. Was really eye opening. I did not know the terms and conditions because I spoke to Xnet when I was signing up. I mentioned what I wanted to do. I mentioned that I host a few experimental online services. I'm also a fan of linux o/s and alot of the 4 - 8gb files are quickest thru torrents.

I know alot of torrents are illegal, infact 99.99% is a very true account. with TSB Bay services, etc... all monitoring torrents now a days, it's getting risky and Xnet have a 2 strikes you're out policy. However, xnet should throttle the the speeds to maybe 50k on the ports, etc... rather than have some people get 400k and the rest 4k.

People not being able to surf the net due to downloaders = not cool. lol. So yeah bro, that's for that information. It gives me a way better understanding of how it all works.

I think the disconnection fee is 50-50, (if I leave) because they legally have to give us the option of leaving for free, before they enstate a rule. Please correct me if I'm wrong, i love feedback.

So at the end of the day, where does that leave us all? Battle it out until Xnet get stronger lines?

Cheers

They did not inform you because the T&C you agreed to did not change.  It is only for new customers signing up, and they are made aware of it during sign-up.  Virtually all ISPs have a minimum contract, so XNet has simply changed from a nice ISP to a normal ISP.  They have not "gone bad" or anything like that, they are just migrating to "normal".

Wonder what their policy is on users who had an Xnet account in 2007, but cancelled it mid 2008 due to not needing internet connectivity, and plan on reinstating their account in Jan 2009? :O Because I am in this boat. I'm assuming I'm screwed, but some Xnet reps here might be able to give me a definite yay or nay.

Any re-connections, re-activations or relocations done after Nov 1 2008 will come under the 1 year (monthly reducing) contract.

How about the fact that noone on xnet seems to be happy with the service that you are delivering? Surely you are not expecting people to pay to get out of contracts that are not fit for purpose?

I recall you can put your account on hold, or a low cost e-mail only account which should not get affected by the 12 months (reducing) charge?
