I have TelstraClear cable broadband, my computer sits right next to the modem.
I was going to move my computer to the next room and after doing some research thought it was just a case of purchasing a longer cable to connect the modem to my computer
Emailed TelstraClear to confirm the specific cable type I would need to buy. The response was that I would not be able to buy this particular cable via a retailer, only through TelstraClear and that a technician would be required with a charge of $59.95.
Are TelstraClear steering me straight here ? Any advice appreciated.
I assume its a standard network cable between your pc and your modem (shows up as Local Area Network in your PC??).
If so, you can just buy any length of cable from DSE and just plug it in and go (would take 5 - 30 seconds for your PC to find the modem automatically again and renew DHCP).
Another TCL customer should be able to confirm the cable type.
If you are wanting to move the phyical modem then TCL will need to visit as they will need to move the RG6 coax to the new modem location.
If you are just moving the PC then you just need to buy a longer cat5e patch cable to go from the modem to the PC. In this case any network cable is fine. This would obviously mean a cable running from the existing modem location to the new room.
The other option is to a buy a wireless router which will mean you are cable free.
