Clearnet is my ISP. Using a 1st gen iPhone. Have tried smtp.vodafone.co.nz, smtp.vodafone.net.nz, smtp2.vodafone.co.nz, smtp2.vodafone.net.nz and my providers smtp server address. APN is www.vodafone.net.nz. Can surf and get email fine but can't for the life of me send email over vodafone's network.

Big bums!

The smtp address for Vodafone mobiles is smtp2.vodafone.net.nz if its not working on your device, Check out the device.

Make sure your device is using port 25 and no SSL

Ah right! Didn't think to check the default port. Why is it set to anything other than 25 anyway?
