SKY AND VODAFONE TO LAUNCH NEW SERVICE FOR NZ CONSUMERS

SKY Television and Vodafone today confirmed that an agreement has been reached to launch a brand new service for Vodafone customers.

The new agreement will allow Vodafone to bundle SKY content, mobile and fixed line voice and internet services, providing an attractive and compelling “quad play” service for their customers.

The new five year agreement is a natural extension to SKY’s current content agreement with Vodafone, SKY Mobile TV, which delivers a variety of entertainment and information channels, including an exclusive made-for-mobile news channel [SKY News] plus live sport to customers across Vodafone’s 3G network.

John Fellet, SKY Television CEO, says, "Our strategy is to offer content to customers anytime, anywhere so that they can watch what they want, when they want to. The extension of the relationship with Vodafone to become our pay television telecommunications partner will greatly benefit consumers with the associated discounted pricing arrangements that bundling will deliver.”

Russell Stanners, Vodafone CEO says, “This is another excellent example of how our two brands are able to work together to provide consumers with the full ambit of communications and entertainment options – either at home, or on the move.”

Sounds very interesting. Any ideas on pricing?

Seems to be no further info on the Vodafone site.

Only announcement - we haven't seen anything yet.

It's interesting - we take mobile (albeit Prepay) and home phone and broadband with Vodafone and also have SKY (like so many others), so it'll definitely be very popular (if it's priced well and have good features)

Doesn't say when the packages are going to be released.

We used to have the Telecom and sky package until we moved to Vodafone and it did work out a wee bit cheaper.

So I'm hoping for some good news on pricing!

I wonder what the Com Com will think of this?

They have ensured that mobile+pstn+internet packages haven't happened yet.

I noted that too on a thread over there, and it makes me wonder if it'll get changed to phone + internet + SKY

The Commerce Commission really are a funny lot. In many ways they aren't really in the business of ensuring that customers do receive the best value for money.

Yea - it is ironic that being able to offer an amazing deal that your competitor can't match is considered uncompetitive so is frowned upon by the ComCom.

Granted it is for 'good' reasons ... competition is good but the big guy pushing around (or out) the smaller players doesn't always help the consumer in the long term.

Sorry - off topic I know.

Unless the discounts are substantial I couldn’t personally like the idea of bundling a significant number of important services together. Many VFNZ services have minimum contract terms and as most of us are aware there is significant competition in many areas – landlines, broadband, mobile etc… - unfortunately perhaps not so much in the PayTV area. Anyway when you get stuck with a bundle which has a minimum contract term and one of its components significantly changes its relative value it becomes easy to be in the position of getting a worse overall deal than if you have obtained services individually. There may also be a problem if the bundle provider won’t let you cancel parts of the bundle and/or prevents you moving part of the bundle to another provider – as just one example if the SKY component of the bundle couldn’t be debundled and shifted back to SKY there may be a new connection fee applicable! While the provider of such bundles benefits greatly from both reducing costs of billing/account management and also from locking customers into a number of linked services I feel that from the consumer side the potential difficulties of unbundling may well be more significant than the benefits unless the overall discount at the start of the term is considerable.

I think people will decide whether it is worth sticking with Vodafone for 1-2 years (or at least they should start thinking about the contract), which then will show if the package is worth it.

Personally, I think it's alright. Not bad or good. You trade something away for something back.

The package would be something like Total Home + SKY + Mobile. Total Home is 12 months with $150 disconnection fee.

Obviously if one cancels one part of the package, then all the other parts are then separated and charged as such. The user should be prepared for all the extra fees that come out of that.

All I can say is wait.
