My elderly mother in law asked me to pop over last night (we live next door) because her sky and internet went down.  She'd called both sky and vodafone but either during or right after the call it came back.  But she said she smelled burning.

As soon as I went inside there was a distinct and strong smell of what I would best describe as a strong smell of slot cars and slight burning.  It wasn't faint, it was strong.

I couldn't see anything immediately wrong, but while looking I heard a definite 'click' and the sky and internet went out again.  Looking at her router (?? the thing that is plugged into her fiber ONT??? sorry i know nothing about this) it had power but no wifi or internet light on.  After about a minute both lights came back on.

A few minutes later there was another click and it happened again.

I told her that I suspected her router was having electrical issues and that she should turn it off and call vodafone the next morning and ask for a replacement router.  I'm worried that it could cause a fire - I know nothing about this stuff but it definitely smelled like burning to me.

She called today but hasn't had any luck.  She said she had real trouble understanding the person on the call, but effectively they have told her that her connection seems to be working fine so there is no action they will take.

I am very concerned that the router is faulty and that there could be electrical issues.  Smelling burning isn't something I think she should overlook [or is this something that we shouldnt worry about].

Is there someone other than the general help line that she cab call to address this?  She's pretty stubborn and wont go without her internet despite me telling her to turn it off and ring back so I need to find someone who will take it seriously if that's required.

Burning is definitely bad.

Hopefully @MichaelC or @sansom can help you.

Does she also get her Sky content through the internet?
The Sky satellite set top box should be relatively unaffected by internet outages I would have thought.

That might mean the issue is elsewhere than the router?

Related to the power cuts maybe? Though I would have thought a power surge would have popped the fuses at least...

Check this out:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/sky-box-bursts-into-flames/54F6P64YROTS3PV7KD23YVUTI4/

There has been more than one instance of Sky Box fires... happened to a friend of mine.

While you are waiting for a fix:

Make sure there is plenty of clearance around the suspect devices that are likely to melt of issue sparks.

Put wooden pads or table mats under suspect devices that are likely to melt to reduce the likelyhood of damage to cabinets and carpets.

Make sure fire or smoke detectors are working.

Insist with the provider that while the items may appear to be working (remotely), there is smoke and bad smells coming out that need serious attention.

How is the sky and modem router connected to the power? Connected to wall 3 pin socket's or multi board power adapter / plug?

Cheap power plug multi boards can go faulty and some also have loose connections that cause power arcing etc. Get a electrician to have look to play it safe.

It could be that the power connection is loose and is going on and off. IMO. Check that first, but otherwise it could be one of the power adapters that have faulted.

+1 on it being a cheap powerstrip. Probably finally turned the heater on and its cooked it. The overload cutout on those things also often go bad and will cycle on and off rather than tripping properly.

My bet is that they are sharing a power point or more likely a strip power board... It may have a thermal cutout that is tripping  on and off due to a internal short...

If you are not competent with playing round with electricity get a sparky round to have a look at it..

I have had power boards in the past that were very very loose to the point where you had to bend the two top pins. Though I wouldn't recommend that method!

Hi there,

I'd definitely recommend checking out the power, and what the router/sky box etc is plugged into. The clicking could be the multi-board, so I'd recommend ensuring it's nothing related to that.

If the issue is happening in different power sockets, and the modem is still having issues, send us an email via onlinecare@vodafone.com with her customer number, and we'll take a look at the connection, then look at replacing the router. :)

She is using a 4 point, but the sky box and the router are both plugged into the same 4 point and when the router made a cracking sound and reset itself I don't think the sky box light went out (but it changed colour from blue to purple I think).  But that's a good idea, I will tell her to upgrade to decent 4 points.

The cracking noise I heard wasn't coming from the 4 points, it was coming from the router area (it sits behind the tv).

Thanks to everyone's replies.  We will try replacing the 4 points first and see if it happens again.

Buy an HPM one, not the arlec $3 ones because they all seem to fail quickly, but the HPM ones last the longest IME.
