Trying to get a new VTV box working with my 5 YO LG (not so) smart TV. Able to activate successfully, but display goes blank and vtv box freezes when I try and do anything, like entering passwords or clicking on certain icons in the vtv menu. Able to reactivate using a hard restart, but can't get any further.

Anyone else had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it?

Not a TV problem.

Nothing to do with the TV, it's only showing the information sent from the VTV.  My first thought is that the VTV isn't connected to the internet. This causes issues similar to what you describe.  Check network settings (if wifi) or check your cable connections at that the device has network connectivity.  Beyond that just make sure any updates have been downloaded.

@Vincent13

Hi!

Do you have the correct time showing if you bring up the menu?  Are any of the tiles populated (ie: do you see images in the On Demand section and data in the 'TV Guide' section?

Is this a Gen1 or Gen2 STB?    Is it plugged directly into the LG TV via HDMI or some other device?

Cheers,
Grant

Grant,

Thanks for your feedback. STB has just been purchased so I'm guessing it's Gen 2. I took the first one back as I thought it might be faulty, but that's not the case - the problem is still there. It was directly connected to the tv via the HDMI cable supplied. I managed to activate it and get to the menu screen, but it crashed whenever I went to the neon icon (managed to access Netflix however). Blank screen, no response to inputs. It needed a hard reset and reactivation each time it crashed, until in the end I gave up and disconnected it.

I only bought the stb because my LG tv won't allow me to download new programmes, which means Prime, and TV1/2 on demand and TV3 on demand are not available. I've set up and used vtv before in another house and it works great there. Go figure!

Does your LG TV support 4K.

Sounds like you’re getting menus up, so if it was an unsupported resolution on TV don’t think they’d come up, I do know the Vodafone TV defaults to 4K. When I had a 2013 LG TV, I had to put the VFTV on to a newer TV, change resolution to 1080, and then move VFTV to older TV and then I got a picture on it.

Presume you mean the number on the vtv box rather than the tv? Serial number is 618381168122

Hi @Vincent13

Sorry for the delay. I found the issue.  Your STB is on old software.  I've moved it to a new group so it will auto-upgrade on boot to the current version.

Please power it up and it should update.. then you should be able to add it to your vtv.nz account.  Please let me know when all done and I will move it back to the correct group.

Cheers,

Grant

Thanks for that. Everything works now except Prime, which still crashes the system when I click on the tile. Except this time I can restart the vtv box by unplugging and reconnecting, rather than having to resort to a hard reset each time.

But what's with the Prime 'poison pill' issue?
