Hi. In March 2021 I moved to VoIP on adsl. A mad man you might say…

Anyway it went good for a few months, then my outgoing voice started cutting out when talking, and especially if wife was watching Netflix’s. All the usual things like restarting modem, tried another HG659 and still the same. I get really good adsl performance considering the distance of 2-3 km from exchange. Real world of 17 down and 1 up.

I have spoken to Vodafone about 4 times about it. Problem is it can go fine for about 4 or 5 days, then rubbish. No teenagers in house gaming or torrenting. Anyway Vodafone has got me to hard reset modem on 2 different occasions so they could push config down and I have tried both hg659s I own. One Vodafone gentleman said you need to move to vdsl, but then said Chorus won’t let them. Annoying as neighbour is on vdsl with Spark…

Yesterday they told me it is my modem, and unless I sign up for a year, it will cost me $149. Don’t want to be locked in for 12 months as strongly suspect won’t fix problem.

I am thinking of jumping ship, or maybe getting a 2Talk account to experiment with. I only have an old SPA3000 ata which might introduce problems of its own.

Dont really want to change from Vodafone as got a plan that suits me, but this VoIP problem is upsetting my wife…

What do you guys think?

Not a Vodafone problem but your upstream could be getting saturated

Same thing would happy no matter what ISP you are on

Your neighbour must be much closer if they can get VDSL

Ok. I can throw a stone on my neighbour’s roof from my back door. He is 148 Aicken road Otatara, I am 140 Aicken road. Both of us are 5 acre blocks.

Agree uplink is most likely the problem, pity that I hadn’t hung on to the pots as not gone from our street yet.

Everything is Vodafone. So of course I have to use Vodafone supplied modem for them to load VoIP password.

You shouldn't post your address on here but…

Moving to VDSL will make things worse based on your attenuation from prequal No fibre, and NEAX is removed

However the exchange supports Baseband IP so you can move to a provider that supports that

This is another example of providers choosing to opt out of paying chorus over whats not actually best for their customer

Try contacting yrless and/or Velocitynet and see if they have any coverage where you are, failing that there is Starlink.

Either option will be much faster than what you have now.

Your Neighbor isn't on VDSL it seems - you've actually got both similar sync rates (22Mbit vs 20Mbit). VDSL is also not in your area due to your distance from the exchange, and you're connected straight to the exchange also.

Still given the distance it is impressive the sync speed you're getting. But I'd be personally looking at wireless providers instead like Yrless (https://www.yrless.co.nz/our-products/wireless) as a potential replacement, could be worth hitting them up to see what they're able to give you.

1Mbit is a massive limitation really - yes, you could survive but as soon as you've got lets say an iPhone doing an iCloud backup then your VoIP will suffer for it.

If its just the 'landline' number that you are wanting, might it be an option to port the number to 2talk and install a VOIP app on a mobile phone?

This assumes your mobile coverage is ok and you have a data plan.

At home the VOIP would use your wifi anyway.

We had our home number on 2 talk and a Cisco SPA device but the phone handsets conked out, so I ended up setting the number up on my mobile.

Though after 6 months and disuse I cancelled the landline number.

Hi all. Thanks for all the good advice. HOWEVER I must confess I have found at least half of my problem. I do a speed test probably once every day or so to keep an eye on things...

Anyway been doing one every waking hour to look for problems since in the last week or so has been really bad (sometimes). This morning finally caught it with its pants down. Download of 17.6, upload of 0.45 with 59% packet lose. Traced to Transmission torrent on my XigmaNas box seeding a whole lot of files. Stopped it and speed has gone back to normal. I haven't downloaded anything in a week so not sure what's going on. Have upgraded firmware etc & will keep an eye on it.

Thanks again. Still tempted to try & go back to POTS, but will wait in the meantime.

You can't go back to POTS, it has been withdrawn, your ELT distance is 2.3km so you are actually getting really good speeds for those stats, id be looking at Starlink with VOIP or an RSP that will connect you to Baseband IP based voice

you are actually closer to OTR/E than the OTR exchange but because of the way the cables are laid you are not connected to that cabinet

Vodafone has been known to put folks on baseband ip voice where VOIP is not right for them.

Ahhh, the wonderful geography of Otatara. I would say you are getting great speeds as most people I know out there have migrated to fibre. I am assuming you have no cell service as you have VoIP (like half of the other residents), or do you now have coverage with thanks to the RCG site on Open Country at Awarua?

I don't think in this location any WISPs would have coverage unless they are located at Bluff Hill - which has Sandy Point in the way.

Your upload was saturated. I would like to understand the case for seeding torrents while on ADSL with trying to maintain quality of service-dependent uses like VoIP.

Your options are to change provider for faster service or stop torrenting.
