When using FeedDemon on my laptop with my Vodafone data card, FeedDemon won't synchronise giving me this error:

Error: FeedDemon was able to connect to the Internet, but it was unable to login to NewsGator's synchronization service.  Please make sure that your user name and password are correct in FeedDemon's Synchronization Options.

I know that it isn't my username/password that is the problem because I don't have this issue if my laptop is plugged into my home LAN.  I have duplicated this issue on my mini-note when it is also plugged into the data card.

Could Vodafone possibly be blocking a port or service that FeedDemon requires or is it the data card causing it?

What APN are you using? Remember not all APN's allow inbound traffic so that's potentially the cause.

I have had exactly the same thing.
I have tried several different connections, via my phone, via a MCC and also the built in MCC in my laptop. This only seems to have started happening in the last month or so.
Very annoying when I am traveling and only have the Vodafone connection.

How do I figure out which APN I'm using?

Odds are it's www.vodafone.net.nz there is an option in the VMC software (under manage devices from memory) to change this. Try setting it to 'internet' and see if this fixes it.

Here is a list of public Vodafone APN. Note that the optimiser is on by default on non-3G connections (GPRS). You can opt in or out of the optmiser depending on the APN in use.

However I had anothe thought. Did IHUG use a transparent proxy? Perhaps now that Vodafone is using IHUG infrastructure they decided it was a good idea to cache as much content as possible - and adopted a transparent proxy for their mobile network as well?

If this is the case, a badly configure proxy will cause problems with services that require authentication, such as FeedDemon when it connects to the Newsgator servers.

If indeed a transparent proxy is in use (note this is not the same as the optimiser proxy) then it explains a couple of other problems I've seen reported before here on Geekzone.

It's correct. I still suspect it is a transparent proxy issue.

Looking with netstat FeedDemon opens two HTTP (80) connections to random hosts at newsgator.com.

another possibility is that that news service has been added to the iwf list, in which case vodafone would probably block it as per nz law around new group content legality. There are a few popular news services apparently on the iwf list for not removing child porn and indecent content when asked to.
Sorry I don't have the current iwf list to check.

Newsgator is not a NNTP service. It's a RSS feed aggregator, so I don't think this is the case. If it were then it would be a blunder.
